good lunch in NYC at a good price?

So, you all are so knowledgeable, where should I take a tourist from London for lunch? I was hoping to spend under $30 with tip per person. As always, thanks for your suggestions.

Under $30? Stage Deli. Quintessentially NY, and he/she will talk about it for years.

Try Tocqueville at 15 East 15 Street near Union Square and the Flatiron District. 212 647-1515 Zagat rated 26 for food. They don't disappoint.

Call for a reservation. It's a pretty, understated elegant type of a place. They have (as of last year) a $20 lunch special. Considering how expensive they are for dinner, it's a steal.

NYC is enormous. Lots of options. Dining at the Cafe at Saks Fifth Avenue with a view of St Patrick's is a nice Manhattan treat. Eating at the famous delis also fits the bill whether it's Katz's, Carnegie, or the Stage. The latter two often have long lines so if you have patience for that, go for it.

Dining at Sarabeth's at the Whitney Museum is a nice option.

You can also check some of the NYC dining threads on this forum as well as the Community threads where FT-ers have had get togethers.

The delis are always reliable and first rate. Katz's is a find, Carnegie has the best meats but as Analise said always a line (unless you go like 11 am in the morning!)

Another place is Simply Pasta on 41st Street off Broadway. Main dishes are no more than $12-14 a person, many of the pastas made in house.

Have fun!

I'm almost positive that there was one of the Priced Fixed promotions coming up in November that had $20.04 meals at many restaurants, I think it was in Monday's paper, I'll take a look and see if I can find it.

Here's a listing of 103 places $25 and under

As good as the pastrami is at Katz's, I think the pastrami at Pastrami Queen is even better:
