Now that you're retired, we need to plan a trip with BoeingBoy to head over to the Ridgewood near TRI for some good BBQ.

I am travelling a lot to KC at the moment and will be relocating there very soon. Tried Arthur Bryants - not bad at all- not bad. I still just prefer Gates and I do think that Oklahoma Joes is good. Must do Fiorella's Jack Stack soon. Any opinion on if the Jack Stack on the Plaza is best or the original Jack Stack at Main and 22nd?

Earlier this month I did a MR to DFW and got some BBQ from Hard Eight BBQ. I must say it was some of the best I've had :)

Pretty good but it helps to sit outside or you reek of BBQ by the time you leave.

I sat inside for a little bit but didn't stick around long -- I had a flight to catch an hour and a half later and still had to return the car.

I did purchase around $50 of food though and checked it back to SLC and had been enjoying it for much of last week :D

That's a problem? :)

Actually, I often stop there for lunch when I have an afternoon DFW departure, and I'm always concerned that the strong lingering smoke smell will set off alarms at the checkpoint.

Sims BBQ, Little Rock, Arkansas

Maybe not the best but it's a personal favorite and should be here for people looking.

Make sure to go to the right location though. The one on John Barrow is good, but the one on Geyer Springs is much better.

Crown Ribs at Jack Stack in Kansas City.

Hands down #1

Top 10

I would round out the top 5, that I posted earlier with the following additions;
Arthur Bryant's - KC
Rudy's - Houston
Jack Stacks - KC
Oklahoma Joe's - KC
Zarda's - KC
(as you might infer, I've spent some time in KC recently. And these places all rank up there, IMHO:-:)

I usually stop at the gas station that's up the road a piece and get a couple six packs ^

you don't have to buy the wine, although they have some good Texas wines. It is the Hawaiian/Texan proprietor, not only knowledgeable about wine; but very entertaining and very funny.

Personal favorites:

Pappy's Smokehouse (STL)
Redsmoke BBQ (DTW)

@morgan1929 and CMK10, either one of you tried the Salt Lick BBQ by the Dell Diamond in Round Rock? Do you think it tastes the same as the one in Driftwood? I personally don't think it's as good as the original location (the one in the airport is even worse, always dried out).

rjkgr Aug 22, 2013 11:19 am

Franklin Barbecue is pretty good

I agree, the one in Driftwood is by far the best.

I haven't tried it yet... and I don't want to wait in line at 8:30am... must be basted in baby tears if it's that good.

The wait is long, but definitely worth it. I usually grab some coffee, a newspaper, and a breakfast taco, then set up my portable chair around 8:30 AM. Usually I am about 10th in line.

...or just make sure to attend an Austin MegaDo where Aaron Franklin is our personal chef for the evening. ;)

Ah okay, next time I'll stop in, thanks for the tip.

As to Franklin's, I think it's worth the wait. Last time my friend and I got there around 9:30 and were fifteen in line. We brought an iPad and played games and talked. With good company the time goes by quickly.

Agreed. Montgomery Inn has to be some kind of joke. I can't even describe the awful service I had there.

Won't say I've ever seen service problems there, but the food is not memorable.

Funny, that is the one I was thinking of. I haven't been there for ages in fairness but when I was......

Best bbq in the country is in Kansas City. Arthur Bryant's, LC's BBQ, or OK Joe's. Everything else? A far cry away.

What about Smokin' Guns in North KC? Thinking about it as we will be out that way.

I would add Brobecks. It was a hit during the KC Do
http://www.brobecksbbq.com/

I also learned from that Do that Arthur Bryants is hit or miss. Some love it, some do not.

Some folks tried Big T's after LC's and loved it as well. I may try it next year
http://bigtbbq.com/

Also Slow's in Detroit should be on any list. It's delicious:

I don't even know where to go with this list. NYC, San Francisco, what?!?

The inclusion of Jack Stack, but not LC's, Bryant's, or Joe's, makes me think they were looking for a Top 10 BBQ Restaurants You'd Take a Client Who Might Not Like BBQ for a Business Dinner. All of the photos look all, you know, clean and stuff... ;) Corporate barbecue. No disrespect to Jack Stack - it's certainly good BBQ and probably belongs in any national Top 10 list - but I wouldn't use white linen ambiance as a means of evaluating great 'cue restaurants.

Any list that doesn't include Franklin BBQ is suspect, IMHO.

Well, except for City Market in Luling. No one who's ever eaten there would come away saying "corporate BBQ with white linen ambiance". That more aptly describes Lambert's BBQ in downtown Austin and they are mysteriously missing from the list, if indeed that is what they were shooting for.

I would add Pecan Lodge to that "list that doesn't include..".

I haven't tried Franklin but Pecan Lodge is Dallas is the best Texas Q I've tasted. I'm hoping to try Franklins later this year to compare.

Texas destroys KC in BBQ. Heck even Austin alone can beat KC With Franklin's, J Mueller, La Barbecue, Craft Meats, Freedmen's, Stiles Switch and Lambert's. If we stretched it to 100 miles around Austin...you'd then add Snow's, Louie Mueller, Kruez, Blacks, City Market Luling, Fargo's, Two Bros, The Granary, and many others that I'm forgetting about.
