Wowza, that's all so disappointing! I must say that I think the dining room looked better before the renovation. And all the courses look so blah. I don't like the minimalism and so many of the dishes have dull color schemes. Sigh.

Do you remember any of the wines poured for the premium pairing? I'd love to get a sense of the caliber.

I don't know why the photo is cropped here and below in my review...so sorry!

Thank you! I agree that the pairings don't seem particularly inspired. I do like that it isn't just the youngest vintage of everything, though.

It's nice to have older vintages...but only if they actually pair better. They didn't pair so well (except for that Barolo with the Duck, which was the most successful pairing by far).

I 100% agree with your review there. My husband and I also felt very underwhelmed when we dined at EMP at the end of last year. Our menu was similar to what you had. In terms of wine pairing, we enjoyed the premium options way more at other places like Le Bernadin, or Jungsik. As far as service goes, I thought a recent experience at Daniel felt more personal and warm than the multiple staff that served us at EMP, which is surprising.

“Personal and warm” were definitely not words I’d use to describe Daniel when I was there last (admittedly a few years ago). But that intrigues me, I may have to go back.

I agreed to re-visit Daniel very reluctantly, precisely because of a mediocre experience years back as well! But their service seemed to have changed for the better, a very welcomed surprise. Our wait staff were young, friendly, and attentive; we even had a few pleasant small talks! *gasp* Maybe the Michelin downgrade in 2014 actually made an impact.

* The Woodspeen, Newbury, UK - A relatively new restaurant and close to where my mother leaves. Had dinner there on Monday night with her and thought it was rather excellent with service to match. For example, Mother and I had the venison main and were looking for a red to go with it that wasn't too heavy and a little fruity, the sommelier recommended two wines and brought both over to try (despite not being by the glass). Even though they have wines into the four figures these ones that were both perfect were about £30-£40 a bottle. ^ For the two of us with three courses and the wine it was about £140.

*** Alain Ducasse at the Dorchester, London - Treated myself to a nice solo lunch on Wednesday. Opted for the 7 course tasting menu and decided to stick to champagne (mostly Bollinger Grand Annee and a 2008 Dom Perignon Rose). I had heard very mixed reviews but I thought it was excellent overall with some dishes (the lobster) being standouts. The service was top notch and there were nice touches such as they were happy to sub the cheese for a chocolate dessert at no cost and the order was switched around so it made more sense flavourwise. If I was being really picky I'd say that some of the dishes could have been editted a little, when you're working with top end ingredients I like the flavours and textures to stand out a little more, especially with a tasting menu. Ended up being about £350.

I have some photos of both for anyone that is curious

CappuccinoAddict Mar 17, 2018 10:44 am

I had a lovely lunch at newly upgraded 2-star Takao Takano in Lyon. The chef is Japanese and so some of the dishes have Japanese flair. Phenomenal value at 65 Euro for 5 courses!

Refund update on underwhelming dinner at Eleven Madison Park

I finally decided to email EMP yesterday after having such a disappointing experience and dinner/wine pairings last Sat night. To my surprise, the GM responded last night with profuse and genuine apologies and already has processed a refund of our wine pairings ($275 and $175). I consider that a very generous refund under the circumstances. I also am quite impressed with the appreciation the GM showed in my sharing our disappointment and critique.

While I cannot say I’ll be running back to try EMP again, I can say that the GM’s genuine reaction makes me at least willing to try again when I’m back in NYC. Nice save.

Reading a number of these reviews it seems there is a lot of "ok" and "good not great" - both of which I understand. I have had 3++++ experiences and very sup par experiences at Mich 3 star places.

With that said, is there one 3 star meal in Paris that is a "must do"? I live in NYC and most people I know in the biz advise against doing these meals in Paris for a number of reasons. Curious what people here think.

For us, Guy Savoy was very pricey and yet still worth every penny. An extraordinary dinner.

Never been to Guy Savoy but for me it would be Epicure!! I'll never forget how they were able to take flavors I thought I knew and make them so much deeper and richer.

jakemalloy Mar 17, 2018 5:04 pm

Thanks. It interesting, if you believe in the wisdom of crowds, to do a google search on the 10 3 star restaurants in Paris. Only one was 4.7 out of 5. Most were 4.5 (including Guy Savoy). Interestingly, the most expensive one Alléno Paris au Pavillon Ledoyen was 4.1 / 5.

I would expect all would be closer to 4.7 on the low end and 4.9 on the high. These are all on 300+ reviews.

I noticed something interesting on the Guy Savoy website - they claim they hold a table each day at lunch for those who may want to try but are afraid (or cant afford the price). Its a 3 course prix fixe for 130 Euro with 10 Euro wine by the glass. Anyone have any experience with this deal?

Haha, yep. Go with Michelin Guide, La Liste or something similar if you want reviews of a place. And I agree that the lunch deal sound intriguing, Le Louis XV has something similar in Monte Carlo that is a great deal.

Lasarte Barcelona ***

I was 3 nights in Barcelona. Barcelona has 2 restaurants with 3 stars at Guide Michelin, so this 2 were my "natural" choice. First I wanted to try Lasarte at the second evening but no table was available. So we went on the first day. I had heared mixed reviews on this restaurant so I was a little sceptical. But 3 stars are still "magical".We arrived at 8:30 and were the first guests. It was a sittle wired and we feeled somewhat monitored. It was much better when other guests arrived, the restaurant was sold out later when I´m right. The room is decoratedmodern and in bright colors.https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...87fbff8ff1.jpg

Some art at the table:
https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...2340f6ca07.jpgNormally I decline the usual non-alcoholic cocktail as aperetiv, as I see no sense in paying overcharges prices for some fruit juices. This time I accepted and a few Moment later 2 guys stood in front of our table and mixed our cocktails. Definitively big cinema if needed or not;) The cocktail tasted good.https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...24d48a9679.jpgBeside an a la carte meal they offer 2 differnt menues., The Tasting Menu (235,00 €) and the Lasarte menu (205,00 €). They were able to offer us the Lasarte menu in a pescarian Version so we went for it.First came 3 different appetizers, all creative and of great quality:https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...3ba254962f.jpg

The bread and butter (more cream) selection:
https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...20e1f48d9f.jpg
https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...f4f113f002.jpgFurther appetizers were an Oyster and some green cream, both very nice.
https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...95372142cb.jpg
https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...6d084122b3.jpg
A highlight was the „Queen Scallop with mushrooms, quail egg, cauliflower and truffle“. One oft he best dishes I had over the last months.https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...035db172e8.jpg„Crayfish and sweede and lemon“ – normally this dish comes with cow shank broth cubes, but the changed it for us. Nevertheless very good.https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...9b7cc2527b.jpg„Red tuna belly, kaffir lime, watercress and raw fennel“. The tuna was perfect done, the texture matched perfect. Even if I´m not a fan of fennel I liked it.https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...37c8faf1d9.jpgSea bass with mantis shrimp broth on a vegetable purée with truffle and clams mayonaise“. On the menu this dish comes with snails stew, they served us a beautiful asparagus arrangement.https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...928e4765c3.jpgLast main course was „Virrey fish with iodized sauce, king crab, raw tomatoes and saffron“. Delicious.https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...263a2b7472.jpgFirst dessert: „Ginger and passion fruit sorbet with coconut, carrot and papaya“. I avsolutely liked it.
https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...dab33440de.jpg
„Coffee creamy, cocoa, black garlic and raspberry“. Sounds strange but tasted good, even if it wasn´t my most favourite dessert.https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...37c052cf51.jpg

Last but not least: Petits-fours:
https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...072fdd331a.jpgI was really impressed by our visit. The food was outstanding, the service flawless. The restaurants design is modern and elegant. Form e absolutely worth 3 stars.Only one thing was not to my liking but not the restaurants fault. In the middle of our meal the table behing us was occupied by 2 Russian speaking couples. It is fascinating how loud you can speak in a restaurant and I would never watch videos on my mobile with full turned up sound……

Thanks for the pictures of Lasarte! We managed to get a dinner booking there for our five night Barcelona trip in June.

We also have reservations for:
  • Disfrutar (dinner)
  • El Celler de Can Roca (lunch)
  • Uma by Iker Erauzkin (lunch).
Any thoughts as to whether that is too many for 5 nights (all on separate days and mixture of lunches and dinner)?

offerendum Mar 18, 2018 3:07 pm

Why should it be too much? One starred meal per day is absulutely fine, personally I had already more than 3 stars on one day.....

THR Mar 18, 2018 7:42 pm

That's what I wanted to hear :)

But I was also referring to - are some of them too similar? Is it too much fine dining in Barcelona vs. tapas and other options?

CappuccinoAddict Mar 19, 2018 2:23 am

Am having a lovely trip visiting some wineries in Burgundy and the Rhone Valley and had a wonderful lunch at Maison Pic (3*) in Valence yesterday. Highlights were the amuse bouche of different textures and colors of carrot with yogurt (translating the simple into the divine--that's what I love!), the stunning berlingots (her signature dish of goat cheese dumplings made with matcha and a watercress veloute), and the John Dory with Brittany abalone. The wine pairings were great as well. Shockingly, in a traditional French 3-star restaurant, the berlingots was paired with a sake!! My jaw dropped to the floor. Sake is becoming a popular pairing in the US and even in the UK--for instance The Fat Duck pairs The Sound of the Sea course with sake, but I did not think that a restaurant in the Rhone Valley would dare pour one as a pairing. Even funnier was that the sommelier's explanation was as if I had no idea what it was. She started to say "it's made from rice and is about 16% alcohol." I said "mm-hmm" and her eyes widened as she said "you've had it?" 😂 She also later paired a Brie course with a Swiss cider! I was also poured, and given a refill, of the very classy Raveneau Chablis 1er Cru Butteaux 2005, which goes for far north of 200 bucks a bottle.

I've got Alain Ducasse Le Louis XV at the end of the week!

This is a question I fear you must answer yourself as it depends on personal taste. I see no problem as I don’t ask myself such questions. I book what I wonna try most. Also in my opinion there are always significant differences at the top-level.

Sake can be a very surprisingly good pairing option and becoming more mainstream as well.

I wholly agree with that! I just didn't expect to see it in France.

Had an enjoyable meal at Nahm in Bangkok (1 star in the inaugural 2018 Bangkok guide). Was a notch above the London branch which I ate in in 2011 (also starred) just before it closed. We had the tasting menu which was served “family style”, not really my preference but works well with such strong flavours where eating one whole dish at once would be overkill. There was no quarter given on the spice, flavour and heat levels, a clear tom yum broth was stratospherically and eye-wateringly hot. Favourite dishes were a red duck curry and a dried fish salad with lemongrass and pomelo. Wine, as is sadly common across Asia, was very overpriced, but a nice trocken Riesling paired well with all the strong flavours and heat.

We managed 4 bib gourmands (inc 3 in one night on a memorable street food tour) and we’ll probably do one more of the newly starred restaurants on our trip back. Decided it won’t be Gaggan, as I’m holding firm to my pledge of “no molecular/experimental cuisine” after Central in Lima was my jumping the shark moment for that ethos. 2018 is all about real food, served on plates (and bowls).

exerda Mar 23, 2018 8:17 pm

I ate at Nahm a year or so ago. The food itself was pretty good, with the portions too-large IMHO (I was stuffed), but I wasn't sure it was Michelin-star-worthy at the time. It was definitely better than Sra Bua, though, IMHO, which I was not impressed with much at all (the latter didn't help that I ate there on election day, and they refused to defy the ban on serving alcohol despite pretty much every other hotel & hotel restaurant doing so).

Asia's top 50 list came out yesterday.

I'm appalled that Mingles came in 11th. It's a decent Gangnam, Seoul restaurant but not nearly deserving of that high of a ranking or even its sole Michelin star.

I’m going to say Pierre Gagnaire. The chef worked in Japan early in his career and while French he occasionally does some interesting blends of French and Japanese. Also, at least they used to have an incredibly priced lunch special that was a real bargain, it was something like 110 euros but that was a few years ago.

Was there a few months ago and dismayed that the special lunch menu was no longer showing online - but an email assured me it was still offered so I enjoyed my 3rd (or 4th?) visit immensely!

The last few years I ate in the following (Michelin starred) Restaurants – always the tasting menu with wine pairing – I’ll try to post pictures once I’ve got access to my backups again…

***:
11 Madison Park (New York): Terrific Service and food - two years on I'm still dreaming of the Asparagus prepared in a pigs bladder. The only thing that did disappoint me a bit was the atmosphere – it seemed so cavernous…

**
AbAC (Barcelona): A small gem which has been (deservedly) “upgraded” to three stars by now. Some courses bit spectacular (ice cream prepared right at your table with liquid nitrogen). Great “wine” pairing (Wine, cava, sherry, beer…)
El Club Allard (Madrid): I was there when Martha was still the chef. Absolutely delicious (especially her signature dessert – the Hibiscus flower with rum) – it’s a shame that she left.
Ramon Freixa (Madrid): Food was beautiful and playfully designed, tasted great as well. Despite his broken English I got along fabulously with the sommelier – as soon as I had emptied a glass of my wine pairing (in expectation of the next course) it miraculously filled up again ;-).
Santceloni (Madrid): Impressive cheese selection, compared to El club Allard and Ramon Freixa a bit disappointing….

*
Saüc (Barcelona): Closed by now. The thing I remember most is a course where everything was drowning in foie gras…
EquiTable im Sankt Meinrad (Zurich): Casual atmosphere, interesting local wines (not that common in Switzerland).

Should be ~**
Tannenhof (St. Anton): unfortunately there’s no Austrian Michelin guide any more so this will probably never achieve the fame it deserves. Local produce (as far as possible) refined to perfection. My companion had the whole menu as a vegan version, while I had the “regular” version – both were delicious.

ABaC restaurant Barcelona

On our third evening I decided to have dinner at ABaC. The Restaurant was awarded with 3 stars in the 2018 Michelin Guide the first time.
The hotel is located at the foot of Mount Tibidabo. It may be a nice neighboorhood but I wouldn´t call the Location conveniant for sightseeing.
When we arrived we stood in front of a door and had to ring the bell. When we went in we were in a garden and made our way to the entrance.

What now came was one of the more unusual welcome-arrangements at a restaurant. We were asked to sit down and wait 5 or 10 minutes till our "experience" starts.

After some time of wait we were asked to follow one of the waiters to the kitchen. He showed us the kitchen and we got our first 3 courses.

OK, funny idea. Not sure if it will be my favourite but why always be sceptical for new things. The 3 small nibbles were pretty good.
We changed to the bright Restaurant.

We could choose between the traditional menu (155,00 €) and the avantgarde menu (185,00 €). We opted for the second with the usual modification.
It followed many Courses and to be honest even after not even 3 weeks I don´t get them together so I let you alone with the pictures and fragmental describtions as the menu on the Homepage is now different.

The dinner was over after midnight and when we asked for the check the waiter had nothing elso to do as to chat 15 minutes or so with the people at the neighboor table. Otherwise service was solid. Food was overall good, at some points a little bit "too creative" in my eyes. Nevertheless a nice experience.

In terms of wine pairing, we enjoyed the premium options way more at other places like Le Bernadin, or Jungsik. As far as service goes, I thought a recent experience at Daniel felt more personal and warm than the multiple staff that served us at EMP, which is surprising.

Having recently revisited both LB and EMP, I would agree. However, on a food basis, I would say that Jungsik would actually be the most exciting of the 3 you have mentioned. It’s a bit under the radar - reservations always seem to be easy to come by - but it is excellently-done Asian fusion that isn’t as loud/overstated as that genre of cuisine tends to be.

On a separate note - I am going to be in Copenhagen for a long layover in a couple months, but it unfortunately lands on a Monday, and I am in town only for lunch...so the choices of Michelin-starred eateries is virtually reduced to nil. Of the two starred restaurants I can find open, does anyone have any experiences with either Marchal or Era Ora? I am leaning more towards the former, partly because it is more Nordic-oriented (Era Ora is Italian-inspired), but it has the bonus of being able to hop on the train and go direct to CPH in 30 minutes’ time or so - so a late lunch would be timed perfectly for getting back to the airport.

Tokyo/Kyoto suggestions

Hi all,

I thought I’d ask my fellow foodies whether we are on the right track or need to add some diversity to our upcoming dining choices for Tokyo (3 nights), Kyoto (7 nights), and Osaka (3 nights).

As of now, we have the following booked for us for our 3 nights in Tokyo:

Sushi Sawada (2*) dinner
Sushi Yoshitake (3*) dinner
Narisawa (2*) dinner

I’m pretty happy with those, but always happy to hear feedback!

As of now, we have the following booked for us for our 7 nights in Kyoto:

Kitcho (3*) dinner (we are staying at Suiran, so it’s a 5 min walk!)
Wa Yamamura (3*) lunch in Nara
Kichisen (3*) dinner
Gion Sasaki (2*) lunch
Tempura Mizuki (1*) dinner at RC Kyoto
Nakamura (3*) dinner

As of now, we have the following booked for us for our 3 nights in Osaka:

Aragawa (2*) dinner in nearby Kobe
Hajime (3*) dinner

We have nights off between most of the big 3* dinners, but I still feel we may be doing too much Kaiseki in Kyoto—and I’m not sure whether other restaurants with different styles and different ingredients may be wiser to try. We really love beef, so we maybe should add Isshen (2*) rather than Aragawa? Or are both worth stops? Is a sushi place in Kyoto worth a stop?

I can’t quite bring myself to include French or Italian while traveling in Japan. We’d rather largely stick to Japanese cuisine as much as possible.

We also have some local soba and udon and other restaurants interspersed throughout Kyoto and Osaka.

Let me know if you have strong thoughts about any changes you may recommend. Or if our bookings are fine as they are. Thanks!

Just wondering, is it really worth visiting such a posh restaurant? I've never happened to dine at a Michelin restaurant, so can anybody share your experience of that?
