A request from restaurant reviewers

My husband, son and I are vegetarians who love good food (meaning we're not real into tofu). When we travel though it can be difficult to find good restaurants that have meatless entrees. There's nothing quite like eating pizza margarites every day for a week in Germany or sitting in a Paris cafe eating fake sausage - gag - while you know there's good meatless food out there somewhere. We've tried vegetarian travel sites for recommendations, but they tend to list only the tofu-type places.

Anyway, if you're ever in a restaurant you enjoy and happen to notice that their menu includes meatless food (we do eat dairy), would you mind including that tidbit in your review? We would be very grateful.

A votre service!

I'll think of you when I write about restaurants. In fact, I'm going to edit three of my replies on this board in your honor!

I just spent a week in Marrakech with some friends, one of who is third generation vegetarian and runs two great vegetarian restaurants in Laguna Beach (Cafe Zinc). Morocco is a very good country for delicious and varied vegetarian fare.

Now, what the heck is "fake sausage" and where did you find it here in Paris???

Take heart: with the "mad cow" problems, the French are eating less meat these days. Coincidentally, one of the top three-star restaurants in Paris, Alain Passard's L'Arpege, has recently gone almost entirely vegetarian ... you still have to book a table weeks (months) in advance.

Thank you Pepe!

We got our fill of fake sausage - textured soy with some spices to make it taste like meat - at Jardin des Pates in the 5th. Our concierge sent us there once he recovered from the horror of being asked for vegetarian restaurant suggestions. They even have fake coffee that's cereal based ... if that doesn't give you something to look forward to in the morning ...

Some Vegetarian finds on menus

Letiole: This is an excellent suggestion.

We had a very enjoyable lunch at the West Bank Cafe recently and I was glad that there were menu items that you liked, and that I liked.

Diversity in a menu is good. I will watch for this where I dine.

Indian and Italien are good for Vegatarians. I found very tasty vegetarien food in Indian (Hindu!) and Italian restaurants. In good Italian restaurants you will find a superb Antipasti Buffet, 80% should be vegetarian.
Avoid Mexican restaurants!

I'm going to close this 14 year old thread that was bumped. There are much more current threads to discuss the topic.
