Do you steam your artichokes stem side up or down?

I have, all my life, steamed artichokes stem side down ( leaves pointing up). I read the back of a Costco artichoke bag this morning and it said to steam them stem side up......thoughts?

My 100% Italian wife steams them stem side down. I just asked her about flipping them and got the Italian side eye and a "why would you do that?"
Of course, she stuffs them, Italian style, with seasoned bread crumbs, so upside down wouldn't work.

Stem side down. It is the densest part of the artichoke and requires the most cooking. I don't see much point in cooking the tips of the leaves which don't get eaten.

If they are covered while steaming, wouldn't the most steam be trapped at the top of the steamer?

Drawing from my Spanish side: Only time I know where you purposefully cook artichokes stem side up is when they are done as a confit - low, slow cooking in oil for 40 minutes or so. And there is a BUT to this. Reason why you have them stem side up is because you then take out, drain the confit artichokes and flip them round, searing them stem side down, in a hot pan/iron plate to finish them off.

From the "I never knew there was a contrary method" department ... sheesh, it isn't like a roll of toilet paper. Stem side down.
