In my defence I was suffering a hangover of Defcon Level 5 proportions.I can heartily recommend Marmite for its restorative effect.^

Marmite is nectar of the gods, as for Vegemite and Bovril, you can keep them.

You're not supposed to have a heaping helping of marmite, an average portion would not even be half a teaspoon.

Have I been doing it wrong all these years? :)

This afternoon Mrs Clint Bint issued me with instructions to go to my favourite hostelry and drink copious amounts of beer but make sure I was back home on the dot of 5pm.
What awaited me as I returned home was a sumptuous Sunday repast.
Leg of lamb,Yorkshire Pudding, roast potatoes,a selection of vegetables and home-made gravy.
Plus a bottle of Argentinian Malbec called Dadá that knocked my socks off.
As her culinary efforts, which to be honest are never really that good, reached their zenith I used a spare 30 seconds in the kitchen while she went off to the wine cellar to secure another bottle to secret a large dollop of Marmite in the gravy.
Between you and me it made all the difference. Not that I would ever risk the wrath of herself by saying so.
I hope everyone else reading this had a great Sunday too.It is the best day for food and family.

Surely a thinly-spread smidgeon on your breakfast toast wouldn't trigger a gout attack ?

I love it. Big thumbs up. Especially on toast with cheese.

Most people make the mistake of eating a big glop as their first taste. Apart from my son who eats it by the spoonful, I have never seen anyone eat Marmite spread thick as peanut butter. Except people trying it for the first time.

Annoyingly it seems to be a trigger food for me. I can almost guarantee that it will. The reward is not worth the risk to me!

That is bad news.My sympathies.I get gouty sometimes but it's almost invariably down to the booze.

Marmite seems like a poverty food. There's a lot of good poverty food out there but British poverty food seems to mostly be repulsive enough that no-one who can afford to get his nutrients by other means should consume them. To be more specific, I've had Marmite and it's pretty gross.

Silver Fox Oct 17, 2016 2:38 pm

I'll have a pint of what you have been drinking!

Marmite - No
Vegemite - No
But on the sweet side the Australian Tim Tams (dark chocolate please) are addictive.

But how many here know what Pawill was? ;)

Am fairly indifferent to it. Can eat it, wouldn't really choose to. It's amazing how many people this seems to offend - the "love it or hate it" marketing campaign really reached them, it seems...

Give me salt liquorice, however...

When I was a child, I used to love Shipham's Anchovy Paste and a posher equivalent, Patum Peperium, still exists. I find that there is a very strong correlation between those and Marmite - the same people love or hate both, although the ingredients are quite different.
