Great Beer Menus

I thought I would start a thread where we can post links to bars with great beer menus. I love places that feature 50 or more beers on tap and seek them out in cities that I visit. I'm not likely to try all 50+, but a number that large almost guarantees I will find several I like. As the OP, I think it would help to identify the city (and state / country) and will do so on the first post.

El Bait Shop - Des Moines Iowa

Link

I have not been yet, but will be visiting my middle son and his girlfriend this weekend and they have promised to take me.

I am back and I liked El Bait SHop a lot. We counted 116 taps on the wall. Having come from the Des Moines Brewfest, we lacked the capacity to try more than 2.

The Nook - Huntsville, Alabama

Link

I have been here several times visiting my oldest son and his wife. The food is pretty good as well. Not a fancy place by any means, but comfortable.

Fishale - Panama City Beach, Florida

Link

Fishale has to be mentioned here since it is one of my local hangouts. I avoid during spring break, but otherwise have no trouble getting a stool at the bar. As the name implies, there is seafood (and other stuff) in addition to beer. I usually opt for the mahi sliders and the hoppiest ale on tap. The servers here know their beer and will guide you if you ask.

My daughter, Miss BamaVol, was in town for the weekend. I sent her and her husband, BamaBama, to Fishale Sunday night while we watched the grandson. She texted me that they had arrived on "dollar beer night". Needless to say, it was a late night.

These are places that have 50+ taps.

Flying Saucer - three locations: Nashville, Memphis, Cordova. www.beerknurd.com

Beer Sellar - Nashville. Warning: smoking allowed. www.originalbeersellar.com/

Broadway Brewhouse - Nashville. Downtown location also allows smoking, but isn't as smoky as Beer Sellar. http://broadwaybrewhouse.net/

Thistle and Mirth - Pittsfield, Massachusetts

Link

I couldn't find an actual website for this one. Pittsfield is where I grew up. I avoided the town for years but was back in 2013 for a wedding and was taken to the T&M for a cold one or two and ended up liking the place.

The Casual Pint - Knoxville, Tennessee

Link

Unfortunately, no beer menu online. But these guys have put together a good atmosphere in both locations I have visited. It is a combination bottle shop and bar. There may not be 50 taps, but all are quality microbrews, many from outside the area. I like that this place will take a chance on a keg of something I've never seen or heard of.

My go to beer bar in Houston, amazing beer list, great food, always packed

chgoeditor Jul 14, 2014 5:31 pm

LOL...this reminds me of one of the more eyerolling bar themes I've come across in recent months.

"The soon-to-open Compass Bar will feature 180 bottled beers, representing 180 degrees on a compass, according to owners Ryan See and Patrick Wrona."

Take a moment to let that sink in... Uh-huh. :D

kipper Jul 14, 2014 6:05 pm

These don't necessarily have 50+ beers on tap, but their taps are generally devoted to good beer, and a few have an incredible bottle selection. :D

Zeno's Pub, State College, PA...
http://www.zenospub.com/

Bonus points from me if you can find names on their "Passport: Around the World in 80 Beers wall" for the following quotes:
"Thanks, Dad!"
"I met my husband here."
"I met my wife here."
"Cheese, Gromit, Cheese."
"Who Is John Galt?"

If you get there on a weekend, and let me know you'll be headed there, I'll even buy you a beer if I join you. If some of the old bartenders are around, you can hear stories about me! :D

Al's of Hampden, Enola, PA
http://alsofhampden.com/verify.php?r...t=beerlist.php

Order by number, as their beer list, displayed on flat panel TV's, is ever changing. Again, I'll buy you a drink if you let me know you'll be there.

Holy Hound Taproom, York, PA
http://holyhoundtaproom.com/http://h...ndtaproom.com/

Again, I'll buy a drink for you...

Any of the Sharp Edge locations in Pittsburgh, PA are great, but if you stop at the Creekhouse, be careful not to pass out in the bathroom! :D

All Yard House restaurants across the country. 130-250 beers on tap depending on location. Awesome happy hour and late night happy hour. Also their Pepper Crusted Filet Mignon is the best filet I have ever had outside of fine dining.

DFW Dallas TX

Quantity is good, but quality is better.

Consider two bars, a few blocks apart, near my home in Far North Dallas.

The first has over 30 beers on tap, and yet the list bores me. You've probably had almost all these beers already, there's little unusual or hard to find.

Compare that to Jack Mac's, where they have only 14 taps, but all are Texas craft brews. It's constantly rotating list - when they blow a keg, they replace it with something different. I can visit twice a week and always find something new. If you're a visitor to the area or to the state, they may all be new to you.

Here's today's list, but it'll likely be very different when you get to town.
Code:

(512) White IPA        5.3        16oz. Draft        $5.50

Now, which place would you rather visit?

Other good choices in DFW are the Gingerman and the Flying Saucer. Each has a few locations.

Such sound advice, kipper! I would not limit that to the Creekhouse. I went on their website and couldn't findd a link to the bathroom. However, I did linger over the picture of all those Belgian tap handles. It's only 8:30 in the morning and you have me jonesing for a beer. And any place with 46 taps and 250 different bottles qualifies here.

You beat me to the punch on this one - an all-time favorite. There are two bars. The one downstairs serves Belgian products only. My first time there was after a 3 hour "Brews Cruise" to 3 Asheville area breweries which had been preceded by 2 independent brewery visits. I have come back multiple times despite the way I felt the morning after my first visit. It was here I tried my first unfruited Lambic. I was so amazed at the taste that I went from stool to stool offering every stranger in the bar a sip from my glass.

Bier Station in Kansas City, MO has an awesome rotation of local, craft, and foreign breweries. They always have one wild/sour on tap, and every bartender is a beer afficionado. In addition to the taps, you can either take bottles to go, or pay a small premium to drink them there. Good local sausages and pretzels too. The tap list on the website shows how much is left in the keg too which is pretty awesome for their very limited releases (Bourbon County Stout, etc.)

In the Atlanta area:
- Brick store Pub in Decatur near the Marta station
- Porter Beer Bar in Little 5 points, east Atlanta
- Steinbecks in Oakhurst, south of Decatur. My Wednesday haunt... not the largest beer list but a great bartender is worth a tip of the hat

The Riverside Market near FLL. Honor system beer service and decent food especially the pizza.

In addition to the chain places mentioned up thread, any World of Beer location is pretty good.

:D I can neither confirm nor deny that someone in my family may have, after spending all evening at the Creekhouse, first for a beer sampling, then drinking, as their last drink, consumed a bottle of Hair of the Dog Adam, and then decided that the floor in the bathroom looked like a very comfy place to sleep.

BamaVol, if you are visiting Pittsfield and want to head out Worcester way, I will be glad to buy you a draft or two at the Boynton in Worcester. Draft list in pdf form here . Over 55 beers on tap with a good selection of seasonals. Had some folks visiting from Prague and took them here and they had a ball trying all the different local brews from Berkshire to Wachusett to Shipyard. BBC's Steel Rail Pale Ale is my usual, but I have been know to quaff a Guinness or two or a Smuttynose Old Brown Dog Ale.

Another spot I bring visitors to is Peppercorns in Worcester for the Wormtown microbrewery out back. They have a huge selection, not 50 but they have lots of seasonals and almost one of every kind of beer you can think of. They make a point of including Massachusetts ingredients in every beer.

Hate to come across as a beer snob, but before I visit any place to have a pint I usually check it out via Beermenus or BeerAdvocate. For example, a local favorite is the Bottle Room in Whittier, which also happens to be a place you can earn miles via rewardsnetwork. Not exactly centrally located, but you can't always have everything you want. Sometimes they are slow to update their BeerMenus tap list, so I'll ring them if I need something particular.

Another local (to SoCal) place that I favor is Beechwood BBQ, with two locations in Seal Beach and Long Beach.

There are many equivalents in SoCal, depending on how far you care to go.

Not snobbish, just reality. I would expect a large metropolitan area like LA to have plenty to choose from. In smaller markets, we are fortunate to have one or two and we cherish them. Either way, as a traveler, I like knowing in advance where I will be drinking my beer the first night.

Ashley's in Ann Arbor has an extensive menu with loads of taps, including local craft brews like Bell's, New Holland, Dark Horse, Huma Lupa, non-local craft beers, and a good number of European beers (Chimay, Old Speckled Hen, St Bernardus).

Oh, and Toronado in San Francisco.

Rosamunde's next door is a great sausage place run by an East German lady. All her sausages are fresh made there from quality ingredients and you can take your sausage to Toronado to eat with a beer.

Beer and Burger Joint - Miami Beach
Quite impressive, lots of hoppy choices for those of us who like Double IPAs. Plus, the burgers are really good.

Tyler's Taproom - Durham, NC
They boast 70 beers on tap and they have lots of local ones too. Food is decent, excellent fried pickles (if you like fried pickles!).

Expensive beers are getting more and more common. Though if you look at the list of "most expensive" it's really ridiculous. No one wants to drink a beer that's 57% ABV. (Ratebeer gives the Schorschbräu Schorschbock 57% a horrible rating, though it's suspect since there are 29 rates for a beer whose entire production run was 36 bottles.)

Anton's Taproom- Kansas City, Mo
AMAZING food, and a great selection of beer. I've never been let down here.

BD's Mongolian Grill - Indpendence, MO
I know. I don't even eat at mongolian grills, but they have a craft beer bar with 50 craft taps, and over 100 bottles. Most of the bartenders are real beer heads, too.

Hamiltons Tavern - San Diego, CA
Real fun bar, open late, and lots of amazing beers on tap. They are always willing to let you sample anything, and look for feedback so they can guide you well.

O'Briens Pub - San Diego, CA
It can be hard to find parking, but it's worth the effort. Not a ton of beers on tap, but I've never seen more than 3 on there that I've had before. The beer battered fries are really good, and the Crab Hut in the same shopping strip is supposed to be amazing.

Yes, beers can get expensive: Beercellar is a good sight to follow them on (and sell them on) the resale market.

Another NYC bar with a good beer list:

BTW, I am not really recommending this place - it is a real dive. You can walk by it numerous times and never think of walking in - but they do have an impressive selection of bottled beers.

Hard-to-get beers are becoming more and more common. I can think of several beloved IPAs which I can find, with some effort, maybe two or three times in a year:

Just Outstanding IPA
Citra IPA
Pliny The Elder
Blind Pig IPA

There are several liquor stores in my area which will only sell one bottle of any of the above per customer per visit.

Same here in Chicago, though I've rarely made the effort except for Dark Lord. I'm lucky to have a few friends who pursue hard-to-find beers and are happy to share. On Dark Lord Day we had both Pliny the Elder and Pliny the Younger, plus a flight consisting of 6-8 years of Dark Lord. A friend has a pony keg of Off Color's Dino S'more, and I expect to be invited over for a tapping party in the next few weeks. Another friend's Superbowl party this year turned into a tasting of about 20 rare bottles. The downside to being the beneficiary of this largese: A friend who gave me tickets to the Midwest Belgian Beer Fest has indicated that he may also give me his beer suitcase and expect me to come home with it -- ugh, checked luggage -- filled with some gems that are expected to be released next Saturday.

Jacksonville FL is an excellent beer city these days - and I guess this list confirms it:

Intuition - Bold City - and Green Room (all rated "outstanding") produce some of my husband's favorite IPAs. Note that this list isn't comprehensive. Because a lot of local restaurants have these local beers on tap. And they're sold at places like Publix as well. Robyn

May I ask, regarding the beer suitcase transportation, does your friend prefer any particular bottle container? I hate to hijack the thread, but I was recently looking on Amazon and there was a large number of candidates:

Jet Bag
Jet Bag Absorbent
WineSkin Bag
Bottle Bully ("TSA approved")
Wine Safeguard

Anyway, in order to steer this thread back from the tangent, while I do love getting my drink on with Pliny, JO, and the other wonderful IPAs I mentioned previously, of late I have been drinking mass-quantities of Stone Go-To IPA. In fact, I'm sucking one down as I type this.

I'll be visiting a local cigar bar on Thursday this week, hoping to find some on tap.
