Quote: Really? Before I first did this I: (1) checked the student handbook; (2) consulted a professor to see if it was something that was either prohibited or frowned upon...it isn't.

What's going to happen to me? "Sorry Mr. CMK10, your grades and resume are impressive, however, we heard this rumor that during your 1L year you'd once a week have a beer at 12:30 PM so no job for you"?
You have a very interesting way of responding to advice that you solicited. If drinking is so important, you should go for it. Just don't be surprised if it affects you career in a negative way.

It's a 5 hour break. Knock yourself out and have one beer/glass of wine (maybe not a cocktail if you are worried). It's not like you have a 30 min and are pounding a pint and then heading back to the desk.

Quote: I have been working in hospitality in Europe and in the USA. I have seen many conventions, training seminars, the lot in Orlando and Boston. In 11 years not even 1 lunch had wine, while at night they got wasted. In Italy, every single lunch had wines.
Definitely one of the odd hypocrisies of US culture.

I don't see it, and I'm usually really in tune with such things

No, but a lot of jobs I worked at required driving, Enterprise Rent-a-Car, outside sales, then a City Job as a 911 Operator. At the last one I cut my hand unloading a box one day and I had to immediately go take a drug and alcohol test.

My apologies for being a little harsh. Though to be honest, I didn't solicit advice, I was just asking if anyone else indulged in imbibing.

When you own the company (like me), you may drink at lunch but most of the times you don't. It's not morality, it's not health, it's just my personal preference. I hold my sales guys to the same standard. We have been in business meetings in Europe and Asia where closing a customer required some "comradery" at lunch. So, in those cases, we drank at lunch. Fine. Otherwise, what's the point? It slows you down and makes you less effective for the rest of the (long) day ahead.

That's it.

That's the main reason I don't drink at lunch on a workday.

Though every now and then our practice leaders have a series of small group meetings with the peons in a conference room. They bring beer and wine to lubricate the conversation...

My mom and dad were all but off the boat immigrants from Eastern Europe. Having a glass of beer or wine with lunch and dinner is everyday.

Funny, based on what my sister tells me about life at her Big Law firm, alcohol flows pretty freely when not on the clock. Seems all the partners kept impressive scotch collections in their offices.

I work in tech so we don't have much judgement when it comes to alcohol, so as long as you don't get shitfaced no one cares, though you may get some odd looks if you have a beer at lunch on a Monday.

I know in tech its very prevalent to have beer in the fridges and kegs, but are there other industries where this still happens? Like in advertising/publishing (my impressions being formed off of Mad Men) or banking?

I've noticed the architects enjoy liquor in the office as well. Not going to lie, kind of jealous

Ah,the long boozy lunch. One of the great joys of having an expense account. And the perfect place to loosen a clients lips, break bread with friends and colleagues and generally oil the cogs of industry.
I remember one lunch that continued all afternoon, merged into dinner and ended when we all had to race for the last train home.
Now it's all skinny lattes and polystyrene sandwiches eaten at a desk.Thank goodness I was able to get out when I did.

A couple of years ago I was visiting a client in the US.
She took me out for lunch, and we started talking about what we liked to eat in restaurants around the world.
Then she said "but in Europe, do you drink at lunch ??". So I replied "well yes some people do, some don't, if you do it nobody really cares, I sometimes have a beer or some wine".
She looked enviously at me and said "oh how I would love to be able to do that here in the US as well".

Ours don't, but then again, we do enjoy liquor, wine, and beer at our company holiday party. Last year, we had a beer pong table!
