Yes, some NYC landmark bistros and bars are gone forever.
:(
I used to like "The Tall Ships Bar and Grill" at 3 World Trade Center. Obviously that's only a memory.

Alas. Memories. At least we have those to cherish.

I have mourned the loss of many. All in the Sacramento area, and all so small that only a Sacto native would have heard of them. Eddy's Brau-Hof, Golden Tee, The Hot Pastrami, Blue Iris Cafe, Corral Reef, Marie's Drive in..... Others too.

Sam's Hof Brau seems to still be in business. Might be a suitable substitute. Don't see many hof brau type places anymore. Are there any Eppie's left in Sacramento? I miss them too.

Sam's was ok, but not even close to Eddy's. I wonder why we don't see the hof brau places much anymore. Great food and perfect atmosphere for casual dining IMO. I'll bet we went to Eddy's 10-15 times a year - 1963 to mid 80s.

I think there is one Eppie's left in West Sacramento, but I never found them to be any better than say Dennys or IHOP.

I left Sacra-tomato 20 years ago and rarely look back except to attend speedway motorcycle races at Auburn a couple times each summer.

The restaurant I really mourn for is Gustav Anders' from South Coast Village. A great Swedish restaurant, Chef Anders was a James Beard award winner, Gustav ran the front of the house. Their Christmas and Easter smorgasbord was a thing of beauty.

I also mourn for the all the great NYC restaurants that have moved along, Luchow's, Lutece, Tavern on The Green and others with the great hotels they were in like the Stanhope and Mayfair Regent.

Sad to see that Charlie Trotter in Chicago is closing down. Memorable meals and unparalleled service.

OUCH! I had heard this but forgot about it until I saw your post. :(

The Good World Bar, on Orchard St. in New York. It was my neigborhood pub for ten years, and it closed down roughly the same time I moved out of the city.

It re-opened on Delancey, but it's just not the same thing when I visit the neighborhood.

BTW, it was EXCELLENT Swedish food, not the beer and heavy pours that kept me coming back. They were voted "best burger in NYC", and their innovative bunches were just fantastic. :(

Didn't know they'd gone and moved. It was so far out of my neighborhood that I needed a map each of the few times I went there, and I STILL got lost, but we had great food and great times when we went.

Must try the Delancey incarnation. (as neither was my neighborhood joint I'm relatively neutral)

The place I mourn was my local cafe in my adopted neighborhood in Paris. Nothing special, really -- the food was overpriced and so-so -- but the proprietor, a former footballer, was friendly and a real character, the Belgian beer on tap was good, and it was my great good place. Under the new owners the place isn't the same at all.

There are still some okay hofbraus in Fresno, Silver Dollar and Downtown, but a lot that used to be in the Central Valley have closed. So have some of the great old Basque restaurants.

What Arrondissement in Paris? Name of the place? I lived in Paris for many years, and I'm thinking that I may actually know the place you speak of.
Curious. Thanks.

Dara's Thai Cuisine was pretty good in Mauna Lani, Big Island.

Sort of wish it was still around.. had excellent thai food.. but hard to make it in that particular commercial center.

There was a very authentic German restaurant in Kirkwood, New York (about 150 miles northwest of NYC) that I used to visit on occasion while on business in upstate NY.
"Schnitzelbank"
The owners were from Germany, and the wife cooked while the husband bar-tended.
When the wife cooked, I mean she cooked like you were in her home in Germany. Unreal authentic German food. And they had very rare and hard to find (at the time) German beer.
I think they closed in the late 90's, but have missed them ever since.

I used to love to order "Schnitzel" and hear the wife hammering the pork or veil cutlets in the kitchen with a meat hammer, thinning and tenderizing the meat, then cooking to order. Your taste buds knew from that sound that something wonderful was about to be served.

Amazing food.

Haussner's in Baltimore, without a doubt. Good German food served in a friendly, family atmosphere, with fine art everywhere (literally).

I looked up the closing date -- it was way back in 1999. Feels like just yesterday, though.

I haven't been there for years and years, so I guess it wouldn't trouble me if they closed. :)

I wish I had all the money I spent in Eddy's Brauhof back. I spent a ton in that place. Will never wish to replace the times though. Was a great place to party and the best people taking care of us. Can't believe they allowed that historic place to be torn down. The house that sat in front of the Trailer Park next door was a Pony Express Building. It was torn down too.

Was also on the redevelopment committee for Auburn Blvd. I knew they were going to being down all the bars on that strip. Dropped out after I realized I could save anything. The committee was just a show horse for what was already planned. Maita was what brought Eddy's down. He sat in that committee swaring up and down he didn't want that property. Didn't think the Golden Tee would drop though. That's where all the Cops, polititions and everybody who was somebody would go after golfing.
