I never boil before soaking. Just soak for 8h then cook/microwave in the morning.
Though I haven't tried it, there's a method where you soak the oats overnight, then cook them for just 10 minutes in the morning. Info below:

I've soaked mine over night many times. When I get up and start coffee, I turn on the gas and them cook about 10 min... awesome and so much better than rolled oats.
I've actually cooked large batches and reheated. I didn't think reheated oatmeal was bad and I'm pretty picky about the quality of my food. Reheated steel cut oats are nothing like reheated rolled oats.

Allow me to shock your brains with a radical suggestion. I learned from Japanese friends how to eat oats as a savory rather than sweet dish, prepared in a style similar to this. Variations include using pickled plums with various furikake or steaming with vegetables and a cream sauce. It was mind-blowing and helped immensely with meeting my fiber needs.

Trader Joes has steel cut oatmeal that's already cooked then frozen. It sells for about $2 for a package of two servings. They have a little maple flavor added, but not too much, and work out great when at a hotel with a microwave.

And then there is "porridge with". Oatmeal with a bit of single malt on top rather than milk. The true breakfast of champions
