Yeah. I'm 95% sure the agent made a repricing error. The question is how much of a difference it actually would have been over the $900 that the OP paid.

How about if the airline just did what's morally right in this situation instead of compounding the customer's misery by worrying about obtuse rules and revenue generation? The customer did not choose to stay longer than allowed by any obscure fare rules, rather he was forced to extend his stay by circumstances beyond his control.

They did the right thing for jenniparks, why not for this guy?

I went back to check the fare classes on the tickets, and realized that part of the itinerary is Northwest. Maybe that’s why there was confusion on the re-issue rules. Its been my experience since the merger that they cant really decide if they are actually one airline or not! I did book through Delta – but part of the itinerary was on NW.

My tickets were:

My original outbound flight which I took:
Fare Class V to Detroit to Amsterdam (Northwest)
Fare Class V from Amsterdam to Istanbul (Northwest)

My original return which I DID NOT take:
Fare Class L from Istanbul to NYC (Delta)
Fare Class L from NYC to Boston (Delta)
Total RT Fare: $825.92

The NEW ticket I purchased to get home was:
Fare Class H from Istanbul to NYC (Delta)
Fare Class H from NYC to Boston (Delta)
Total One Way Fare: $876.48

I purchased the NEW ticket because to “change” the original return was $1400.

I still don’t know where they were coming up with $1400, but since I don’t have the details on what they quoted me, I am not sure where that came from. At the Istanbul airport my hands were tied, there is a very small Delta desk with only one person working, and I did not have an international phone to speak with a different representative. I thought it was unfortunate that they would not waive the change fee. I had a letter from the consulate detailing the situation (even the consulate said they would likely accommodate my day later flight!) But I also understand they didn’t HAVE to do that. I am not sure how the residual value of my original ticket was calculated, but essentially there was nothing left to apply toward the new ticket I had to purchase. (Although there is still the $1400 mystery number that I can’t figure out!)

Thank you all so much for your help – I will try one last time with Delta to see if I get anywhere!

And soitgoes, I will try to file a complaint. Maybe that will help. Thanks again!

Can you post the fare calculation line from the E-ticket receipt? You're missing the last part with the rest of the taxes, but what you posted helps.
The fare (including fuel surcharge) for the outbound was $309.50.
The fare (including fuel surcharge) for the return was $417.50.

Subtracting the standard $250 change fee, that would leave $167.50 + taxes credit to be applied during refare.

Which means the Delta agent must have found a fare for about $1550 to arrive at a $1400 total if the remaining funds were applied properly.

That all makes sense; although I am not sure why the reamining $167.50 couldnt be applied to the new fare I purchased. I guess because it was a different class.

Thanks - this has been very helpful. At least I understand it a bit more. I still think it stinks, but at least I understand!

The agent likely erred. He probably should have actually based the calculation on a half roundtrip fare in H (or another available booking class).

For example, HKXAB3 is $595 fare (incl. fuel surcharge) for a half-roundtrip.
$595 - $417.50 + $250 =$427.50 (the taxes should essentially be a wash)

I think that a something in the range of $430 is more likely to be what you should have been charged.

Assuming H class was the lowest available at the time of re-booking, the fare should have been re-calculated using half of the R/T H-class fare between BOS and IST (approx. $1000 USD).

Therefore, the total charge should have been approx. $1000/2 + $250 - $305 = $445.

I basically agree, but the Q fuel surcharge of $112.00 should be including in the credit (unless you are excluding it from the $1000/2, which may be what you are doing because our estimates are similar in the end).

Taxes & surcharges should stay the same, so the re-calculation can be done using just the base fares. In any event, I see no reason why a $400 add-collect would turn into a $1400 one.
