So, booked into U, your companion is not eligible for upgrade anyway. You'll have to get the PNR split if you want to upgrade, but no chance for your companion.

OP mentioned that the companion is a PM though... so the companion should actually get upgraded before the primary ticket holder.

I missed that part. Wouldn't that be a pisser - bought the guy the dang ticket and you miss the upgrade?

I flew with my wife last year on one of these companion tix. Booked into U. Had the itinerary divided and I was upgraded as a FO.
Itinerary was VPS-ATL-MSP-ATL-VPS.
Was upgraded ATL-MSP-ATL.
The VPS-ATL-VPS portion was on a RJ and not upgradeable.
Itinerary was VPS-ATL-MSP-ATL-VPS.
Was upgraded ATL-MSP-ATL.

This is very interesting - we have used 2 of these - CVG-DCA & CVG-LGA - we both (both GMs at the time) got upgraded for both trips. That said, out of CVG the program is of limited usefulness since they try to route us on AA all the time.
