Adding additional segments to the end of an itinerary

I have an itinerary that has my last leg going XXX-ATL-YYY.

I just realized that I need to end up in a different place.
So, what I want to know is...can I make a reservation that starts in ATL... fly XXX-ATL...then just skip my ATL-YYY segment...and pick up a new itinerary, ATL-ZZZ?

My worry is that the computers will have a problem with this, as my ATL-ZZZ segment would takeoff before my ATL-YYY segment.

Thoughts?

Wirelessly posted (BlackBerry8700/4.1.0 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/100)

Sounds risky. I'd either change my ticket or fly Airtran (if an option). You would have to be checked in for two ex-ATL flights at the same time and who knows what the computers think of that.

Or take NW or CO for ATL-YYY. That way, you'd at least get SkyMiles (or 1/2 miles on some CO fares )
