Using United miles for Delta award ticket

Using United miles for Delta award ticket
If I went to the Sky Miles site and found some 25K award possibilities on specific flights/dates and found open seats for my Delta miles..
Could I then call United and reasonably expect that I could use Mileage Plus miles for those same Delta flights/dates?
Or does Mileage Plus have different award inventory on those same Delta flights?
If Mileage Plus has different award inventory than Delta for the same flights/dates, is it a reasonable assumptino on my part that half-empty flights would have still have some seats if I booked through Mileage Plus?
Any answers would be extremely helpful - maybe some day I will figure out a way to repay for some of the great advice I've been getting on Flyertalk. Thanks.

-I had to call Delta to make the seat assignments.
-I had some discussion at the United counter when I asked them to print a ticket for a Delta flight ... "You have to go to Delta .. bla, bla, bla ..."
