El Al airlines in code-share talks with DL

If it happens, apparently, DL would code-share on El Al's flights to and from JFK. They state that this will have no effect on their partnership with AA which only code-shares on El Al's flights from ORD and certain European cities. However, media reports have indicated that El Al will drop AA as a partner if AA enters the Israeli market.

El Al

An Israeli business newspaper is reporting that Delta will code-share on El Al's flights from JFK-TLV. No mention of frequent flyer programs, but I assume that would mean Delta Skymiles on the El Al flights JFK-TLV if the tickets were purchased as the Delta flight. Delta used to fly the route with a stop in Paris but discontinued it about two years ago.

Having flown El Al many times, I can assure you that this is part of Delta's plan to make its customers appreciate Delta's customer service.

But I wonder, in recognition of the codeshare, will El Al do a "Kosher SkyDeli"?

DL to code-share with El Al JFK - TLV starting 3/25/01

Additionally, El Al will code-share on DL flights from JFK to ATL, BOS, Washington, DC, DFW, DEN, PHX, SFO, SEA and SLC. Unfortunately, at this point, it seems that DL Sky Miles can only be earned on DL-ticketed El Al flights.

Delta Air Lines, El Al Israel Airlines Ask DOT For Authority to Provide Codeshare Ser

Delta Air Lines (NYSE: DAL - news) and El Al Israel Airlines today filed an application with the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) seeking authorization to codeshare on flights between Israel and the United States. If approved, Delta would begin to codeshare on El Al flights between Tel Aviv and New York (JFK and Newark) and El Al would begin to codeshare on Delta flights beyond New York on March 25, 2001. El Al also will purchase seats on Delta's New York to Tel Aviv flights scheduled to begin June 1, 2001.

thanks DOC,now maybe I can get full use of my SWU,till now it was coach bet CDG&TLV. Although I think AF in Business would be better than LY Id take LY all the way.

2 Many Miles Jan 26, 2001 11:38 am

AF business is nothing to write home about. LY business isnt' anything special either. I'd go for AF -- the food is better.

Also, don't count on a lot of upgrade inventory here. At least as of 2 years ago, Tel Aviv was the hardest airport in the world to get to using either miles for free tickets or miles for upgrades. It made getting first class tickets to Hawaii look like a cake-walk.

The other interesting thing here is that AA is partnered with LY right now -- in terms of FF programs but not in terms of codesharing.

I thought that El Al was part of the OneWorld Alliance. IF so, does this foreshadow a change to SkyTeam or am I just out of the loop and I have missed something?

leroy11 Jan 26, 2001 1:57 pm

El Al is not and has never been part of oneworld. They plan on code-sharing with AA on ORD flights I believe in addition to the DL code-share. Note that DL will serve Tel Aviv starting in June on their own metal. Biz. Elite will be the way to go.

Either DL or EL AL to Tel Aviv but NEVER NEVER Again on AF!

JRF Jan 27, 2001 6:29 am

I read a few months ago an article in some newspaper that if El AL and DL did a co chair deal, that AA would drop El Al. Also, DL was hoping to bring El Al into the Sky Team.

You never know what will happen in the end of the day, but El Al as a memeber of SK*AM makes sense as they only seem to want SK*AM to have carriers that are not customer over friendly!

DL will increase its Middle East service next month with new flights from its New York/Kennedy hub to Tel Aviv, Cairo & Dubai.

The Israel route, which utilizes nine-year old, 268-seat MD-11 wide-body jets, is the second stint for Delta, which briefly flew to Tel Aviv a decade ago via Paris after taking the route over from Pan American.

Delta said the Tel Aviv route, as well as soon-to-be-launched New York-Cairo -- with continuation to Dubai -- flights will bolster its operations at JFK.

Delta effectively fills a gap left when Trans World Airlines pulled out of the market two months ago and has been aggressive with inexpensive economy and business class fares.

Macenczak said Delta aims for a 10-15 percent market share but added that ``We are trying to focus on our premium product'' since Israel is highly regarded as a major international technology center.

Delta said on Tuesday that within 60 days it will apply with U.S. aviation regulators to share codes on El Al's flights, initially out of JFK and Newark and eventually on flights from Chicago, Miami and Los Angeles.

In response to some previous AF comments...

I actually WORK for Delta, and I avoid AF at all costs.

I've flown AF in C once, and I found it to be decent, but not as good as BusinessElite. The problem with flying Air France on Delta codeshares is that flying AF requires you to fly into or out of CDG, home of the world's rudest airport staff.

The TLV codeshares have been in the works for awhile now. Nothing terribly surprising there.
