I feel your pain
I’m a firm believer that if you want to sit up front then you should buy it.
However my New Years resolution was to play nice with my corporate Concur.
So for a SJC to SLC I leave my fate in their hands for the first and last time.
22nd out of 30 for 2 available seats on yesterdays afternoon flight.
As a Diamond with high spend seriously????

Over the years and inflated status ranks I too have become a member of the "WFBF - Want First Buy First" camp. Especially since most of my DL flying is on domestic transcons. If they were short regional hops, not a big deal. But for 4-5 hour segments, F has become my preference.
That said, 22/30 as a DM? That's impressive. (Not in a good way, of course)

I normally buy first but I do it with the upgrade offers as most of the time for me it is cheaper than buying out right. I don't always win but when I don't win I normally get the upgrade. Which sometimes makes me wonder why I buy into first. I mostly fly JFK > SDQ.
However, with the new SkyMiles I'll be buying into first even if the upgrade offer goes up, unless JetBlue starts offering their mint product to SDQ.

The worst I ever did as a DM was 11th out of 71 for one F empty on a FLL-ATL segment, which is one of the top 5 Delta city pairs in the entire system.

As Diamond with Delta Reserve I was in the 30s out of 70 or 80 on an ATL-SLC widebody flight in 2021, maybe 2022. I thought something was wrong but didn't push it because there were hardly any F seats and I probably wouldn't have got an F seat anyway. Then I read on here someone referencing a known bug where occasionally you are not put in your right slot on the upgrade list. I don't know what the solution is, if there even is one.
