Approaching peak summer travel 2023, and passengers sitting in Y on 5/6 hour flights flights like BOS to SFO, JFK to LAX, etc still get no meal?

I haven’t seen a meal on transcons in Y in probably over 15 years. Even the 7+ hour ATL-ANC doesn’t get one unless you are in F.

JFK-LAX/SFO (and a few other transcons out of SEA) pre-COVID always had free meals catered for Y (although they weren’t hot and usually consisted of a pre-packaged sandwich or a fruit and cheese plate).

DL probably realized that:

No meal in Y = minimal impact on ticket sales.

Easy cost savings measure.

Delta seeks to be a premium carrier - transcon meals was one of the things they led on pre-Covid. Another way the airline is becoming less premium

It was a nice differentiator for the couple years they had it, IIRC, about 2017 until the start of COVID. Helped me choose them for transcon flights from SFO instead of UA. Wish they’d bring them back.

Given the current demand for flights though, I suspect they figure they don’t need to provide it anymore to help fill seats. Plus now they can basically sell the same thing for $10-12 and people buy it. Unfortunately I suspect this is one of the things that isn’t coming back any time soon.

If I am in economy, I almost prefer to bring my own food. At least there are no surprises if what they have is terrible (likely) or nothing offered at all. But please, nothing that smells!

There is nothing premium about any US airline.

Yep this was definitely a thing. RDU - SEA was on the short list although oddly RDU - LAX was not (perhaps due to the competition from AS to SEA but not LAX)

The last I can remember was the “Little Blue Bag” where one grabbed it after scanning their BP from SLC-ATL circa 2003.
