Sure, I would usually prefer the hotel that I pick over one that someone else picks, that's a different issue than getting a good rate. Plus when DL is footing the bill you can generally pick your own hotel and just submit the bill rather than go with whatever they pull out of the hat.

Even if DL pays for the room at JFK, OP is still paying for the unused room at ATL
OP is a DM, it's certainly not a stretch to assume a high probability of similarly elite status at whatever hotel he had booked, so getting out of a cancellation fee is probably not hard (not to mention these are pretty easy to bypass even for normies).
