DL and UA compete for last 4 weekly CPT Frequencies
https://www.routesonline.com/news/29...n-frequencies/
This comment from UA ...
UA pulled out of Lagos in 2016 and using CPT as a proxy for "serving continental Africa" is pretty rich to say the least when they already have CPT frequencies.
This comment from UA ...
“In addition to seamlessly connecting key business and government hubs between the US and South Africa and enhancing consumer options and convenience, the allocation of these frequencies to United will enhance competition against Delta, which has been the incumbent US carrier to continental Africa for almost two decades,”

To state the obvious, someone going to Lagos would not want to connect through CPT, unless there was no alternative or unless the trip was really a MR.
It's almost funny that UA is trying to argue that making UA a monopolist (at least among USA carriers) on the USA-CPT nonstop flights would enhance competition, unless they mean that it would be an enhancement in the sense that the word is used on FT.

not so fast ... they're running LOS-IAD a couple times a week with a 787 (saw it on the arrivals board when I was there late Feb)

Also ACC-IAD started in May 2021 on UA
But DL gets labeled as having some kind of two decade stranglehold on Africa when they don't even have a single CPT route yet? Politics.

This thread is really more about UA's bizarre response and it's competing IAD-CPT application than announcing DL's application for ATL-CPT.

It is interesting to note that as of right now neither Delta nor United have the flights loaded in the GDS for sale. Hopefully the DOT will make their decision sooner than later as to allow the carrier(s) ample lead time to market and sell tickets for their proposed launch date.

Does the DOT make the decision? I understood (from the other thread) that DL was getting frustrated with some South African government official failing to make a decision, although this might have involved the triangular routing that was proposed earlier and would seem to work well for DL.
the turning ATL-JNB flight into a ATL-JNB-CPT flight is a South African government issue.

DL Gets Permission to Resume Capetown-ATL Nonstop Flights
https://www.airlinerwatch.com/2022/04/delta-airlines-gets-regulatory-approval.html
Delta Air Lines resumed its flights to Johannesburg in August 2021. The airline applied to the South African government to extend the service up to Cape Town in 2020. But documents released by the US' department of transportation revealed a regulatory stalemate. South Africa's reluctance to amend the airline's Foreign Operator's Permit led Delta to abandon its bid. In return, the US transportation ministry revoked coterminalisation rights granted to South African Airways (SAA).
Delta Air Lines' application to fly a triangular route between Atlanta, Johannesburg, and Cape Town was recently approved. The US carrier also submitted a new application this year in February for non-stop flights between Atlanta and Cape Town.
"We regard the approval of Delta Air Lines' application to fly a triangular route between Atlanta, Johannesburg, and Cape Town as a big win and we will continue to work hard to expand 'air access' because more flights means more tourists and more tourists means more jobs in the Western Cape," said David Maynier, the provincial minister of finance and economic opportunities, on Tuesday.
"We remain committed to increasing investment, expanding trade, and scaling up tourism with the United States, and so we look forward to finally welcoming Delta Air Lines to the Western Cape," Maynier continued
