JFK Terminal 4 Rant - I miss Terminal 2

As I get on in years I am finding Delta Terminal 4 to be a pain in the ***. It always seems to be an endless walk to the gates and half the time one or more of the moving walkways don't work. I also have to think twice about going to the Skyclub if I have a gate near gate 20 or one at the other end of the terminal and want to take bus. I wish there was a bus somewhere towards the middle of the gates.

When we return from our trips we have to walk a mile to the baggage claim which is at the other end of the terminal and there are no moving walkways for a good chunk of the trip. If we arrive at gates 40+ at night the buses to gate 18 seem to be shut down so we have to hoof it.

I miss terminal 2

And I still hate it. Only time I was ever there was when I needed to connect via T4.

I love the ability in T4 to get in my daily 3 mile walk w/o turning around every couple minutes :-)

For the life of me, I can't understand why DL ditched the iconic Pan Am Worldport in favor of the dump that is Terminal 2. The loudspeaker announcements at the gates are poor quality hard mounted stereo speakers and gate agents are always talking over each other. That and the terminal just always seems to reek of Wendy's and fast food.

Terminal 4's security area is bad (as is the weird escalator you have to take down to the gates post security) and the long walk to the gates suck but at least it's modern. The SkyClub experience with it's upgraded food with the outdoor roof (pre-COVID) makes up for any inconvenience.

When you land at JFK past midnight on the high B50 gates after a long day of work and flying, and have to walk all the way to the baggage claim, you will hate terminal 4.

Terminal 2 is slated to go as well. Terminal 3 had more capacity than was needed with Terminal 4 extensions and was in pretty rough shape as well (remember the "diapers" used to collect rain water from the leaking roof).

Terminal 2 is easy to get around because it's a tiny square. I appreciate the crow's nest SkyClub, but otherwise the gates get claustrophobically packed at peak travel times.

I for one actually enjoy the opportunity for a brisk walk in T4 before (or after) a 3-6 hour plane ride.

The walk from the JFK B 43-55 gates in T4 is no joke. Its a haul! I really like the T4 skyclub and think it is located about as well as can be expected given the lay out of T4. Kind of the middle ish. As for lay out: JFK T4 rivals the MSP A14 - F 14 hike and the SLC A25 A 1 trek. Say what you will: ATL is damn near, dare i say, efficient to get around.

The T2 club is nice too, but T2 is a bit of a refuge camp when it gets crowded.

I hate JFK T2. It always seems crowded, confusing, and tacky to me.

T4 is generally nicer despite the long walks. It's especially disappointing that the Centurion lounge is so far from the DL gates (and also a bit hard to find at first).

If you love T4 now, you'll love it even more when the A Gate expansion is done and the regionals move over there.

Then when LGA is finished with 37 gates (more than JFK T4 & T2 combined) across 4 concourses, and a longer trek between the furthest gates than JFK's worst A to B connection, maybe JFK T4 will seem good by comparison.

Am I one of the few who wasn't sad to see JFK's T3 go? I generally try to have an appreciation for historic things, especially historic things relating to aviation, but I found T3 to be a dump, historic as it was (not that T2 isn't). Maybe they could have renovated it to not be a dump while keeping the iconic parts but I remember being very unimpressed with T3. I'm also not the least bit sad LAX T3 was demolished either.

Conversely I don't mind T4 at JFK (at least for connecting - been a few years since I've had to deal with an originating or terminating flight there). Long walks generally don't bother me (though I do think they need to do a better job of keeping the moving sidewalks working). I enjoy walking through terminals walking past gates and looking at the monitor to see where each flight is heading, plus it can just feel nice to walk before or after sitting in a plane for several hours.

Man, don't get me started on MSP. It's the only airport where they have a little train station next to the moving walkways in case you look allllllll the way down into the distance and say "oh hell no!"

I mean back in like 2017 when I didn't have status or GE yet I showed up to T4 40 minutes before departure in the middle of the transatlantic rush, had to go to an agent for a boarding pass, app was being janky. Got in the very long normal line, ended up getting escorted to the front by a Delta rep about halfway through which was a lifesaver. After all that had to run all the way to B53 and somehow made the flight, last one on and door closed right behind me. That run suuuuuuucked.

HA! i have a love hate relationship with MSP. Love the people, gate agents etc. The two clubs are really nice even when a little crowded. The mall area is cool and the restaurants are solid as well.

BUT when I land and am taxing to the A gates and look out the window knowing what a hike i have ahead of me, I think yyyeeesssshhhh!!

In addition to all the good features you note about T4, you omitted that for domestic arrivals in T4 at gates B2X to B4X you have to go UP a 3 level helix.
