pretty typical to have cooking stuff downstairs. Companies will normally have bbq for the ramp every now and then or as a reward for hitting certain metrics etc.

I hope this doesn't scare you too much, but quite a bit of GSE runs on larger propane tanks that they *gasp* store on the ramps.

but please, let DL know, I'm sure someone would love the laugh.

I think it's great. Glad they can do stuff like that and they don't have to put everything back into storage somewhere every time they use it. And PHX is a fantastic outstation.

Still that NBBQDL is so cool. Makes me wish I was a Tech Ops engineer just to be able to design and build that for fun.
And it even looks more comfortable inside than a CR2.

If the OP is so worried about safety and environment they may want to research why the PHX terminal skytrain which has the highest bridge in the USA goes above ground versus underground. Can you say "UNDERGROUND LEAKING JET FUEL PLUME"? You have to love how some things are right below your feet.

The OP didn’t seem worried at all to me and was just asking a question.

NBBQDL has come through for us more often than you'd think. ;)

Would hope there's not a propane tank behind those grill doors. If so that would seem to be a bigtime safety violation and issue.

I'd consider reporting that to DL/PHX airport authorities because if there is a propane tank in that grill a number of things could transpire -- all of which have bad endings.

Better let them know about those airplane fuel tanks too.

Can't be too careful.

Ever been in an oil refinery? BBQ grill outside of every control room. And millions of gallons of flammables on site. Oh my!

BTW... you do know that many of the vehicles on the apron (apart from the airplanes) might be propane powered too... right?

Are you joking?

This thread has exceeded expectations (admittedly they weren't that high to begin with).

Another former ramper here. Yes, we eat and have lives too. We even cookout sometimes (I can't think of a station I ever worked at that didn't have a grill). You might also see us playing (touch) football or playing catch on the ramp during downtime. On occasion we would play some "bagroom baseball", which sounds scarier than it is. It's essentially whiffle ball played in the bagroom.

ah yes, sorry, this is clearly a very important thread with lots of crucial information being disseminated

To answer the OP's question, it's more convenient to grill the customers' checked bags right on the ramp. <sarcasm>

I'm pretty sure they thought those things through.

Or did you think someone snuck it in in the middle of the night and parked it in plain public view hoping no one would notice or see it?

Below the Jetway at Delta's gate F6 in PHX is this gas grill.

It's there because not everyone gets to fly to MEM, MCI or AUS for lunch.

Not worked up at all.
Just never saw one before on any ramp at any airport in decades.

A bit dramatic in post #4 if you aren't worked up about it.

NBBQDL is cool. TechOps also made a BBQ set up out of an old engine, I want to say its an old Pratt 2000. Pretty cool.

Aww, I just found out NBBQDL doesn't fly...now wouldn't that be cool!?!?!

I work as a nurse and on the weekends we would crockpot cook in our tiny nurses kitchen , when we had hot dogs and sauerkraut cooking, would get comments from visitors and patients saying " smells like a german deli" . Lol . Team building/team unity/team bonding is a good thing no matter where you work
