saying it's disingenuous implies they're doing it specifically to lower their segment/MQM liabilities, which is absolutely not what's going on here. These routes are artifacts of the way reservation and ticketing systems have worked for eons. Now, could DL fix their IT to recognize these? Sure, but there are a million other broken things they could fix as well. For the vast majority of travelers, this is a very rare edge case.

This isn't a good argument against these types of flight numbers because when you misconnect in the middle you get the full MQM and segment for the original direct flight plus the MQM and segment for the rebooked flight from connection point to destination.

The only caveat, and this is an experience on UA, I am not sure if DL numbers it’s flights like this, is some flights even with a plane change are a single flight number and count as one segment.

in other words XXX-YYY-ZZZ is a single flight number and therefore is a single segment.

UA and I think US both did this. I’m new to DL so not certain it numbers flights like that.

UA also used to give an additional 0.5 segments for premium cabin purchases, though I'm not 100% sure on how UA's new system works.

To me it seems petty to fight a policy when you fully understand that you aren't going to benefit. But hey, everyone has their hobbies I guess :)
