Basic Economy checkin question

Answered my own question (at bottom). Mods please delete if you'd like to.

(I just tried calling Delta to ask this question but hold time is currently 5.5 hours)

Tomorrow I have my first Delta Basic Economy flight (out of SMF). Is it better to check in with a representative or via a kiosk to increase my chances of getting a non-middle seat? Can I even get into a line to speak with a rep if I have this level of ticket? I am a SkyMiles member.
Thanks!

EDIT: I see that upon online checkin the seat was assigned for the first leg of my trip. I was under the false impression that it only gave me a seat upon physically checking in for this cheap ticket class. I got a window seat for my first leg!

Seat gets assigned whenever agent starts working on it. Busy days with lots of IRROPs DL may have agents not at gate start working on seat assignments for BE. Otherwise in general you have to wait till the gate.

Each flights seating is handled separately.

This is a consistent issue with the app. The second leg always shows At gate for seat, a seat map with no seats and no zone. Even after your seat is assigned, you wont have a zone. It has been like this for months.
