First Time Booking a Refundable Fare

First Time Booking a Refundable Fare

I have always been one to plan well in advance and ensure, barring unforeseen circumstances, that I intend to fly the trip as booked. There have been very few times over the years I have paid change fees and they were warranted when I did.

Anyway, I came across a great First Class fare for next summer over the week of Fourth of July between ANC and TLH. While I am 70-80% sure the travel dates will not be an issue, I decided to "buy up" to a Refundable Fare at checkout. Even with the refundable fare increase the total cost was much less for First that I usually see on this route. I treated it as a Christmas gift to myself!

The ticket was issued and on the confirmation page it says "Changeable/Refundable." Other than that I don't see any obvious "proof" that it is refundable. The ticket issued into "D" class for both outbound and return.

Just in the slight chance I will need to change or cancel, should I arm myself with any additional proof? I can see the Fare Code in the price breakdown, but with no past experience regarding refundable tickets I wanted to ask the FT community for their thoughts.

You should be able to view the full fare rules online, and it should state that it is a refundable fare. Curious to see what kind of MQM bonus you receive on a refundable D fare.

You can get a complete copy of the fare rules and fare basis code by clicking the "Fare Rules" link prior to purchase and then save a copy of that. After booking, you could do a dummy booking to get a copy (assuming fare still available). ITA Matrix also has fare basis codes and fare rules. The penalties section will say "Cancellations Permitted". Non-refundable fares say "NONREF/PENALTY APPLIES" in the email receipt below the ticket amount. Not sure what they say on refundable fares, but I would expect it to provide some indication of refundability.

Only full J fare gets a 100% MQM bonus. C/D/I/Z fares are considered discounted First/Biz and earn only 50% MQM bonus. It's right in the How to Get Medallion Status page on delta.com.

Thanks for the replies! I was able to do a dummy booking for the same fare rules and save a copy.

On the receipt where it usually states NONREF/PENALTY APPLIES it is blank whereas my past tickets all had that notice. The web confirmation page says REFUNDABLE/CHANGEABLE so I have that printed too.

Standard 150% earnings because MQM bonus is based on fare class, not the refundability of the fare. Additionally, a fare being refundable isn't necessarily tied into the class it books as but rather the actual fare rules. Delta does like to use standard fare classe to make something refundable, but that is not always the case; for example: around either Christmas or the superbowl last year there were Q class fares between CHI/MSP that were completely refundable.

If you are unsure and are a PM or DM then consider using SM so you can cancel up to T-72.

Perhaps someone will correct me, but IIRC there are also many "refundable" fares where the refund still incurs the $200 change fee. It's just that you can have the ticket price (less $200) refunded to your original form of payment instead of getting Delta Bucks that expire in a year.

OP (and anyone else) should review fare rules before purchase to make sure they fully understand what type of flexibility is being purchased.

+1. Refundable/changeable doesn't mean there isn't a fee for doing that.

IME that's fairly common on fares originating internationally. Not so common ex-US—not saying it couldn't exist, but I've never seen one. If anyone can find such a fare I'd be curious to see it,

This very well may be true. I don't know. In any case...the variability is itself a good reason to really double-check the detailed fare rules when buying a ticket where something like this matters to the purchaser.

It’s very uncommon for domestic US flights, but not unheard of for international flights departing the US.

As advised, always read AND SAVE the detailed fare rules when booking.

I don't know how to see the fare rules after purchase without going to EF unless I can duplicate the exact fare code on some dummy booking for the same flights.

As I see it, a D fare is a high fare class, but it's not the highest, so I want to think of it as being like P was for domestic FC (with 150% MQMs rather than 200% for F). Based on this analogy, my guess is that there are refundable and nonrefundable D fares offered in various markets, so one would need to check carefully.

Also, as at least one person mentioned above, the terms refundable and changeable might not mean what you think: refundable in airline language does not mean fully refundable at any time (at least up to scheduled departure) without any fee or penalty.

However, if the OP buys DL tickets frequently, for leisure travel (the exception is if there's some business reason involving charging the right accounts), there might not be any advantage to having a refundable ticket over one that is fully changeable without restriction (including changes to at least the destination as well as the dates and schedule) and without any fees. To me, a DL credit is almost as good as a credit to the original form of payment since I know I'll soon be purchasing another DL ticket.

When AirTran started ATL-HPN, I booked a refundable L-UP ticket. I did get the first class MQM bonus, but I don’t remember the fare bucket it booked into. The refundable Q fare is the closest thing I have heard.

OP here. Thanks everyone for the replies. I have copied the full fare rules below for the exact Fare Code I have for both outbound and return segments. Based on my reading I do not see any penalty amount to be forfeited in the event of a cancel. Ultimately if there was one it would not be the end of the world, and I do fly DL frequently for leisure so could always use a certificate. Just curious if anyone sees any wording here to indicate otherwise.
