Why is that so hard to understand?

Just thinking for those very good at math, how many combinations can be created by 6 letters and numbers?

Assuming the first character must be one of those four above, and there are no other restrictions I'm not aware of: 241,864,704.

There is no point to your efforts. They are random alphanumeric codes. What are you hoping to find?

You are incorrect about capital Is and Os.

For example, today confirmation has two Is and two Os in it. On Alaska, not all airlines adhere to the same rules.

When airlines and GDS systems send messages to each other, they always identify the airline that owns the booking:

HDQAA A23456 The booking with confirmation number A23456 is owned by American Airlines and was stored by the AA headquarters location.
MUC1A A12345 The booking with confirmation number A12345 is owned by Amadeus and was stored by the Munich computer center.

I had to look up a reservation for my father recently and it included either the letter O or the numeral 0, I forget which. When I typed in the confirmation number and his name, I typed the incorrect character but it pulled up the reservation regardless. There was a little note at the top of the page saying something along the lines of "you typed XXXX0X but the reservation is actually XXXXOX."

So how do tools like CheckMyTrip or TripCase figure it out? If you try to enter your locator number, sometimes it finds your record and sometimes it says your airline or travel agency doesn't participate but you can enter your itinerary manually. So there must be some way it decodes them. Or maybe it just tries looking them up in all the different systems to see which one gets a result?

It looks in the system that they use. If the PNR is located in it, then it can pull it up. If it's not in system they use, than you must manually enter. Same reason some airlines can pull up another airlines reservation.
