Upgrade offer on domestic award ticket?

I booked a domestic RT MC award RST to FLL for a very nice point level and full understood I would not be able to upgrade my seats. However looking at my itinerary, I am seeing cash offers to upgrade to E+ and FC. Is this a new thing for award bookings? Can I expect the offers to potentially improve over time, or disappear altogether?

xliioper Dec 13, 2017 7:35 am

People have been getting them for awhile now on award tickets. I wouldn't really count on anything as far as going up or down. Mostly, my offers have stayed the same as of late and then go away if FC gets down to a few seats. With an award, the only way to get an upgrade at that point would be to cancel and rebook as an C+ or FC award.

javabytes Dec 13, 2017 8:05 am

If you accept one of these upgrade offers, and you're a PM or DM that gets free redeposits, what happens to the cash you paid for the upgrade should you decide to cancel your trip?

Fees for purchased UGs on paid tickets, when bought post the original ticket purchase, are not refundable. I cannot imagine VA Ave being any more charitable WRT purchased UGs for award tickets.

FlyerWx Dec 13, 2017 8:43 am

I've noticed an option to upgrade with cash on an award ticket for a while.

The price fluctuation seems like a YMMV thing, because I've seen a ~$10 in C+ price for no discernible reason, whereas FC prices usually stay the same.

jk88usa Dec 13, 2017 8:46 am

Just for kicks: I have a ANC-SEA flight on an award ticket next week, and I can upgrade to C+, for a mere $531! How can I resist?

I’m guessing it’s just trying to charge me the full C+ one way fare, but who knows

I've been watching one of my wife's trips in January. C+ was $45 or so and FC was $191. Now that C= seats are gone FC jumped to $303!

[Consolidated Thread]: Cash upgrade offers on Award tickets

Currently upgraded to Y+ - getting a cash offer to upgrade to domestic F.... Never seen this before on an award ticket.

Is this fairly common?

flyerCO Dec 19, 2017 3:21 pm

When is departure?

PV_Premier Dec 19, 2017 3:23 pm

https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/delt...thread-95.html yes

hortkie Dec 19, 2017 3:29 pm

I've just started to see this within the last 2 weeks or so. I agree it must be new?
It is on the seating chart.
There are options for cash buy up on an award ticket and can choose which leg. There is another option to 'bundle' the 2 leg with a cost savings.

Hawkeyefan Dec 19, 2017 3:31 pm

Yeah I had a similar thread on here a week ago about this.

Is there an answer yet to whether one receives F RDM's and MQM's?

That was what I wanted to ask next.

Departure is about 2 weeks out.

Will you be buying up?

Please report back your findings to this premium thread. Ty

I really can't imagine getting any RDM/MQM on an award ticket (although this is Delta IT we're talking about here ...)

I just booked a trip in March for gf and I. Got C+ at booking, and while changing seats got FCM offer both ways. Considering it.
The offers were DTW-PHX ~$270pp, PHX-DTW ~$220pp

dc2000 Dec 20, 2017 6:19 am

I received an offer to upgrade on an award ticket from YVR-MSP. Cash offer of CAD 197 in the messages in the app as well as on the seat map. Decent offer especially since I need to check several bags.

cmx Dec 20, 2017 11:43 am

I'll have a data point in a month, but I suspect that it will not earn MQMs, and probably will earn MQDs. It shows (RY) on the view my trips page and NX on the receipt. RSW-JFK is the route. Here's the receipt:DescriptionAmountCurrency

rec'd the offer and actually pulled the trigger on this a few weeks ago. I THINK it was BWI-MSP-STL and I only wanted to UG the BWI-MSP but it made sense financially to do both legs. IIRC, no MQD's, no MQM's. I still felt that it was worthwhile, for me, at least.

dilbertsdaddy Dec 20, 2017 2:30 pm

how about PWM? has anyone seen an offer on those and would you get the 150%??

Yes, and yes. As long as you don't pay in full with PWM, if you did PWM in full you don't get any MQM.

turkeyRIOO Dec 20, 2017 3:02 pm

Data point ATL-GCM Comfort+ $313 each way F $463 each way. I have exit row and drink vouchers, going to take a pass on this one.

Someone in one of the other threads also reported seeing RY in their "my trips" after taking one of these offers. I agree, it's probably yes to MQDs and no to MQMs.

johnm4 Dec 22, 2017 12:51 pm

I was surprised to see an offer of $63 per passenger each way on BDL <-> MSP 12/25 - 12/30. Upgrading to Comfort+ or First Class was the same price.

This is also with using a Dela Amex Platinum companion certificate. I'm FO now with a Reserve Card. I took the upgrade one way and the return FC looks sold out now.

Fare classes show First Class (G) and Main Cabin (V). My companion shouldn't earn miles as the free companion, it'll be interesting if the upgrade changed this.

minnyfly Dec 22, 2017 12:53 pm

I received an upgrade offer for my award flight a couple weeks ago. Wasn't an attractive offer, so I declined.

Mileage ticket+Cash buy up to F

Just need quick clarification then this thread can be locked and deleted. Searched quite a bit and found various versions of this question.

If a client books a mileage ticket then takes an online offer to upgrade with cash to domestic F, will they receive MQDs based upon the incremental up-fare?

Thanks,

Thanks,

EDIT: After doing some research, it looks like you do receive MQDs only (not MQMs however)

No MQM/MQSs, but you do get MQD for the FCM amount.

Have you experienced this yourself. There was just a discussion about this in the FCM thread last week where someone had the same question and it was stated by multiple posters that you don’t earn any MQMs/MQDs.

EDIT: Looks like those posters where wrong as I found another thread where others were reporting that you do receive MQDs but not MQMs. Sorry for giving the OP the wrong answer.

No worries, just wanted to give my input. And yes, experienced this in December. Just looked it up to make sure I was not mistaken, and surprisingly I earned RDMs for the FCM buy-up as well.

DLATL777 Mar 18, 2018 2:53 pm

Got it. MQDs seem fare since it is money spent on the ticket, MQMs/MQSs wouldnt seem logical.

FCM on Award Ticket

Hi all,

I have a FCM offer on an award ticket. Any idea if I'll earn MQMs or RDMs if I take the offer? I did a quick search and I couldn't find an answer.

There's this post in the FCM thread, among others:

although I can't find the actual reports; and this was later corrected to say that you earn MQDs for the buy-up amount, just not MQMs (which kinda makes sense).

There was also this thread:

This. You will earn MQD for the FCM amount, plus RDM based on the MQD and your standard earning rate.

ryandc99 May 6, 2018 10:15 am

Anyone taken one of these upgrades recently? still curious if there are any reports of earning any MQD for doing this.

TetonSig May 6, 2018 2:23 pm

Did it in early March. TPA-ATL-IAH coach award flight for buddy and myself. FCM’d and got MQDs and RDMs for the upsell amount.
