So net effect will be an increase in the current fares that actually get you an assigned seat...

Paul Jacobson said in the $DAL Q3 conference call that due to gas prices jumps that fare have not had a chance to "catch up" yet. This may be part of that maybe?

"Really the success of that product isn't how many people buy it, in our mind, but how many people don't buy it and choose another product," he [Glen Hauenstein] said, after the company reported better-than-expected profits for a quarter plagued by deadly hurricanes. "And that's really where we're focused."
So there you go. Admission that this is a fare hike for everyone else more than it is about "offering choice" or "not paying for services you don't need".

They've had BE on international flights for some time now. Not really newsworthy (and not actually mentioned in the interview).

It's not really evidence of that. There are, for example, lots of people drawn to car dealerships for $199/month lease deals who decide to spend more. Fare searches may send people to Delta who, when presented with Basic Economy fare restrictions, think about it and decide it isn't what they want and spend more. There are parallels - upsells from Main Cabin to Comfort+ or First...

Real evidence of a fare increase might take the form of Main Cabin RASM in 3Q2017 vs. 3Q2016.

While it's been offered on some routes, it was nowhere close to being worldwide.

+1 - This. While people on this board obsess about BE, DL (as well as other carriers) also routinely provide attractive pricing for lousy connections, off-hours flights and the like. When you get to the website and discover that the peak hour nonstop costs double the cheapest flight of the day, you may determine that it's worth the extra cash.

BE represents little risk to DL. It is a way of filling seats which it otherwise can't sell. While you may have no choice on a once per week flight, on busy hourly services, many will wait an extra hour not to sit in a middle seat near the lav, so they book away from seats with only that available. The BE guy gets that seat.

I was specifically commenting on DL's admission that they are interested in BE as a tool to get people to buy other (higher priced) fares, not on the actual movement of fares (which is obviously complicated). In contrast to the other narratives usually presented.

Pretty sure Glen said the exact opposite.

Ugh, just raise fares and leave longhaul alone. It's bad enough on AA when non-elites have the choice of any middle seat they want until T-24 without paying. And of course Copycat Parker (AA CEO) will follow suit and their BE is even worse!

Wasn't BE already rolled out systemwide on DL? I remember seeing BE fares on international flights as well.

With that said, do you think DL will also remove its (more) generous overhead allowance for BE passengers, compared to AA/UA? Just checked DL's website and it's still shown that BE passengers are allowed overhead space.
