DTW-ORD this morning. What's up with not issuing seats 3 hours before flight time?

Two and half hours to flight time on an MD-88. 65 and 54.
I did a dummy booking and counted 50 possible seat selections, but only one was non-first class, non-C+ or non-preferred. I guess the key is that 54 people want to get on the plane, but either don't have status or don't want to pay extra.

Are you sure some of these aren't non-revs? I know a DL employee who flew DFW-ATL a few years ago and there were 110 Non-Revs on the list for 80 seats. All the other flights out of DFW were oversold and all the non-revs flocked to that flight.

The answers to "huh?" are:
1. Seat maps did not mean much in the past and now mean even less with BE. On micro hops such as this there may well be a lot of BE traffic.
2. W&B
3. Blocked for other IRROPS.

Flight complete.
No weight/balance issues. The flight went out almost full. FAs were checking bags, because the bins filled up.
First class and C+ were half full until just before the door closed. All were non-revs, some flying to Chicago for the day "to get their hair done".
Many, many Basic Economy people.....how can I tell? They didn't have boarding passes printed at home or at a kiosk. They were all printed at the gate (well...maybe at the check-in counter).

It's been a while since I've been on a HK list, but there used to be a box on the boarding pass that would have the word "confirmed" on it near the seat request box.
That box used to say NRSA Standby etc too.
