You can't change. Just cancel and rebook. It will be an extra hit on your credit line before it gets refunded.
That's what I figured the procedure would be. The credit line hit isn't an issue for me, but shoot, if I can save $200, why not?

The advantage of having two refundable one way tickets rather than a refundable RT would be that if you had to make other arrangements for the outbound, such as another carrier or driving, missing the first leg would not cancel the remainder of your ticket. For the eclipse, for example, if you made a last minute weather related change and decided to see it a different location, you would still be able to use your original ticket/reservation to fly home. It gives you more flexibility, where the usual reasons for buying the RT would be to avoid the possibility of having to pay two change fees and to save money with RT fares that can be cheaper than two one ways. On international tickets, the total taxes and fees can depend on whether you book as two OWs versus a RT, including on award tickets.
Very helpful, thanks! The weather is looking good so far, but a lot can change a week out. Hopefully there are still rental cars available if I have to go to plan C or D. |
We'll be a Lake Chatuge, GA at a winery eclipse party. I dawned on me this weekend, while winging my way cross country, that the best seat in the house would be on an airplane, way above any haze or cloud cover.

Well, as long as you have a window seat on the right side of the plane on an eastbound flight and the flight path is in the 70 mile wide path. Think of the chaos on WN!!!! |
Late to the thread, but flying into DEN Sunday then driving to Nebraska via backroads, then back to fly home to BTR early Tuesday. Too concerned with traffic to try returning on the 21st.
|
Flying to STL tomorrow. All flights from MSP, DTW, ATL, SLC, and LGA showed F0Y0 earlier today.
|
I hope everyone had good luck today on their eclipse runs. I count myself blessed that the path of totality passed right over my house and that the weather cooperated. I had a nightmare that some rogue cloud would come along just as it was going dark, but it worked out perfectly here in Knoxville.

Had a nice view in Central Oregon - smoke from the forest fire wasn't as bad as yesterday.

Had an amazing time in Nashville. A friend of a friend rented a pontoon boat and we went out on Old Hickory Lake to get max totality. I ended up with a nice sunburn and am appropriately exhausted.
Delta did me no good though. Booked JFK-BNA and then BNA-DTW-LGA way back in February. JFK-BNA was cancelled, tried to do LGA-DTW-BNA but that was delayed enough to misconnect in DTW, so I spent Friday night. Coming back, our BNA-DTW flight is delayed over 2 hours (and increasing), so it looks like we will be doing another overnight in DTW, as there is nothing coming out of BNA at this point. Hoping I can finagle a room at the Westin tonight. |
I decided to avoid the rush and do it tomorrow.
:D:D:D |
CHS was quite cloudy but about 30 seconds before totality, we a thin spot and had an incredible view. Next time, I live about 4 miles from the epicenter.
|
I had a very difficult commute up the hill to my neighbor's pool; quite hard in flip flops with all the beer and food I was carrying. (The wife did a wonderful job of carrying the beach towels!)
100% totality sighting with zero clouds. :D Commute home several hours later down hill with no beer or food a bit easier...albeit wobbly Of course, no MQM |
Nice cloudless view of eclipse from the field near Idaho Falls airport! One-hour delay on the IDA-SLC return, due to a traffic jam of executive jets all leaving at the same time. Well worth the journey...

Flew to MCI a few days before, where I have some relatives.
I was going to see it somewhere in the vicinity of MCI, but bad weather made me go in "storm chaser" mode, or more precisely, the exact opposite -- seeking out cloudless skies. We drove close to 200 miles but found a cloudless spot. Today, MCI and STL were both nearly sold out on DL, all flights to anywhere. Other airlines were nearly sold out of everything. |
Eugene today offering $800 vouchers. They raised it to $900 before I boarded, but still had 4 people ("in jeopardy"), meaning due to be involuntaried. The only alternatives they had to offer was a flight two days later.
|
They should have raised the price. $800-900 isn't that much for a two day delay, although a lot depends on whether they were also offering hotel and meal vouchers.
