What happens to unpurchased International FC (D1) Seats?

This may seem like a silly question, but I was curious. Considering there isn't an "upgrade list" for international flights like domestic flights; what happens when there are seats that noone purchased, even with FCM?

Do they fly them empty?

Thanks!

The filthy nonrevs steal them. Rest assured you will see no leggings.

They will fly empty if there aren't a sufficient number of GUC fliers or nonrevs to fill them.

There is an international upgrade waitlist. People using miles to upgrade may go on it. People using GUCs go on it and clear into available inventory in advance, or into empty seats at the gate.

Then seats go to non-revs.

If not filled with non-revs, seats in D1 can fly empty.

Non-rev is short for non revenue; it means airline employees and their family members/friends flying on unpaid space available travel privileges as a job perk.

There is no mileage upgrade wait list if not cleared 24 hours prior to departure.

...or anyone flying on an unpaid ticket including those on official business, technicians, certain suppliers, journalists, and so on.

Also, if coach class is oversold, they'll do an operational upgrade ("op-up") to create space in coach. In my experience, they offer op-ups to the highest medallion levels first.

If coded correctly, GUCs.

Non-revs don't get upgraded. They get cleared into whatever seats remain available after revenue passengers are accommodated. So in theory the only way a non-rev gets an F/J seat over a paying passenger is if there are no more paying passengers eligible to be upgraded (no status for domestic, or no cert waitlist for D1 TCON or international).

In practice sometimes maybe this procedure isn't followed, and there's a huge thread for discussing when this happens or is imagined to have happened.
