Upgrade after maintenance delay?

Flying SFO-SLC this eve and we hit a 45 minute maintenance delay. Several folks opted to get off the plane including a couple pax in F.

I was 1/0 on the upgrade list so if there had been a no show I would have been next. Now the flight is going out with two empty seats in F.

My question: normally the GA sorts out no-shows and does "battlefield " upgrades, but that doesn't really apply here. I don't want to be a DYKWIA guy - is this something I bring to the attention of an FA? Or do I just take my lumps and stay put in my middle seat?

FAs are not allowed to upgrade passengers, and also don't have access to who was next on the list.

I figured as much ... I even have the wait list handy on the phone to show.

Dammit.

You can always ask. Worst they will say is no. But that's the answer you should prepare for. On the off chance they say yes, well... victory goes to the bold.
