First time in First class

Be gentle please - first post.

My ten year old and I are flying Delta in February from our home town through MSP to MCO. After I purchased our tickets I got an offer from Delta to upgrade to FC for a reasonable amount so I splurged.

We are on a 757 going with lunch service. On a 767-300 coming home also with lunch service. I'm wondering what to expect for the meals? Would you consider them "kid friendly"? We won't have time coming back to grab anything due to a short connection time. If she doesn't like the full meals, will she be able to get one of the snack packs at no charge? I know from previous flights there are things in those she will eat.

Thanks in advance for any tips or advice!

(Dad of 2) I think the meals are generally fine for a 10 yo. I'd ask the FA when I got on board what the choices were and maybe ask to save you one of the two if it looks like the other may be a poor choice.

I've never tried getting the snack box from the back but I think you will have to pay.

Easiest bet -splurge a little more and throw a bag of trail mix in the carry on and then just see what happens, so you can enjoy the trip

IME domestic FC lunch tends to be a choice of a sandwich (hot on planes with ovens) or a big salad (with meat), typically served with some additions like fancy potato chips, breadsticks, fruit, a small green salad, and a packaged Dancing Deer cookie. On longer flights, there's now hot soup too. There's also a snack basket and you should also be able to nicely ask for something from the C+ enhanced snack basket if the meals don't work for your kid.

I'd agree with the suggestion of packing something. A snack could be handy if weather delays force you to wait a long time at the gate for one of your flights, etc.

Fine wines, perfectly seasoned Kobe Beef, organic fresh kale salads, hand-made sushi rolls made to order, Krug Champagne, and a selection of the finest desserts from all around the world....

If you want a good meal, buy one before you get on the plane or eat before. There is absolutely nothing special about domestic US airline meals and chances are they may not have your choice when they get to you/or have anything worth eating.

In general, Delta serves decent food in first. If your child is a picky eater then you may want to bring some snacks but if (s)he generally eats a pretty wide variety then you will be fine. It's about a three hour flight so not the end of the world if you don't like what you get. And there will also be a snack basket which is full of stuff kids like.

Put in a special meal request. Delta offers both Child Meal and Toddler Meal as options. You can request online, just pull up your itinerary and go to the Special Requests section.

Congratulations for being able to take advantage of Delta's first class upgrades. Hopefully your weather will be nice like today's balmy mid-80's.

In my experience you will have to pay for the snack box and you are not allowed to buy one until coach has been served. I have tried this several times and never got to buy the snack box because they were all sold to to coach passengers.

Back when HOOUs existed and could be used on snacks, I tried several times to use them for the blueberry granola (Mrs May's or something like that). I always received it for free, but my HOOU was never accepted. YMMV.

Hopefully your flight will have the hamburger as one of the options. I've had it offered on a couple of lunch-time flights when I've been up front. The side is some kind of potato salad that's decent. But the burger, IMO, is one of the best meals you can get on a domestic (standard service) FC flight.

The last time I asked I got one immediately, and free.

The OP may do best by thinking about her daughter's cares and needs. She may not get a choice of standard meals, but a child's meal may be unwelcome, and snack boxes may not be an option. If she's fussy, take a picnic that both can enjoy, and then if you find something on a Delta meal tray appealing, speak of your great luck.

+1
The hamburger is great. Had it for lunch in F on an ATL-SAN run this past spring. IMHO, they should always offer it as a lunch option.

O/P, have fun on your first time up front!

Op here, thanks to everyone for their advice!

I will make sure to pack a snack just in case. She's not super picky but having never had the option of a meal, I just didn't know what to expect.

We are really looking forward to our trip and hope the weather is nice. It's been really cold here in South Dakota so excited for some warmth. We only have one day in Orlando before our western Caribbean cruise!
