Can Delta fly domestic Japanese routes? Link to interest in SkyMark Air
http://www.bloomberg.com/news/articl...ors?cmpid=yhoo
It mentions Delta as possible buyer of Skymark. Could Delta fly Domestic in Japan?, or would it use Haneda slots for international?

I'm no authority on the topic, but I believe carriers can apply for 'continuation' services. For example, KLM operats AMS > BOG > CLO. But you can't buy a ticket BOG > CLO on KLM.
You can buy tickets AMS > BOG, and AMS > CLO (which includes the BOG stop)

I'm not sure a deal between DL and Skymark would go well with the Japanese aviation authorities, but it would be great for DL to finally have a real partner of some sort within Japan.
That said, back in the day, I believe NW operated tag flights from NRT to KIX. These were international flights in the sense that customs were cleared at KIX and not NRT.

NW had long standing agreements with JL for domestic segments. You could even redeem miles to book domestic JL segments as part of a TPAC trip. For whatever reason DL discontinued that relationship right after the NW merger only to come back to JL later during their bankruptcy.

DL would not be able to operate domestic segments, but with government approval it could acquire a Japanese carrier or enter code share or other agreements.
You will see many foreign carriers listed as code shares on US carriers in the US and it is certainly possible to book entirely US domestic tickets with miles/points earned in foreign carriers' programs.

PS-I'm not sure whether purchasing interest for Skymark is a good direction for DL as they are already beefing up SEA and winding down NRT operation. Sort of goes 180 if DL does this. There maybe lots of orphaned NW members within Japan but is that enough to re-invest in Japan flying?

Looks like DL will begin tag flights from NRT to KIX in March 2016 on a 757. Would be the first time DL has operated this in over 5 years. The NRT hub lives on!

What a pleasant news. Flying to kix via hnl is near impossible with most booking taken by agents 330 days in advance. Hope this stays year around.
