DL Seat Map Problem?
Currently booked in economy comfort ATL JNB/RT non-stop. Been checking every day or so to try to move the return seats to bulkhead window. Now, all of the sudden, it appears we are the only ones with seat assignments... all seats are available except for about a dozen of the same exact seats blocked out for outbound and return. Previously there were about 20% (guess) of the seats claimed. I'd really like to grab those bulkhead window seats but I'm afraid something strange is going on and don't want to lose the seats we have.

Yeah, I know... I'll give them a call. It just seems like more of a system problem since both flights are like that... Depart 2/25, return 3/9...

I called DL and they saw that all seats except our 2 were available on BOTH flights as well. Just seems strange to me that everyone on both of our flights would decide to change off the flight. As a longtime IT person, I don't believe in coincidences. The only thing that makes me think it is valid is that our seat assignments were not lost. I did end up getting our return seats changed... so, now we have 29A/B on outbound and return. I hope they are decent!

I've seen this happen after a schedule or aircraft change. DL starts with an empty seat map and it can take at least a few hours for everyone to be assigned a seat again.
IMO trying to grab a better seat in the interim will not result in the seat you pick sticking, but this is based on only a couple data points. YMMV.

Interestingly, looking at the seat maps today, they now look like they did a few days ago with a decent number of assigned seats. Hopefully the seats the DL agent moved us to will stick... so far, they have. The skd change theory sounds plausible but I'm not sure the times changed

While the plane may remain the same, something in schedule shifts sometimes seems to cause seat chaos.
It seems most of the time, if you lose the seats you have and another pax grabs them, the original seat holder loses.
Sadly, many of us know to check our seats frequently...
