OK....coupla tips. From what I've heard for travel on Basic Economy fares on/after Feb 1, 2015. You'll be able to try and find general seating (no Priority/EC) during the check-in (24hr before departure) period. Also...Delta will seat ONE parent with a 5yr old or younger. I think that would take a call to Res. For those couples out there with 3 or more under 5....don't know what to tell you....lol.

I just splattered three rows of seats in the skyclub in "e" with my beer, funniest thing I've seen here in about a year....

Despite the yucky feeling of beer coming out my nose it was worth the price of admission !

Last summer we booked a trip to Hawaii for family of 4. Was sort of a last minute trip, booked a few weeks out. We couldn't get 2 seats together as all the middle seats were taken.
Turns out they were taken by families with no status not wanting to pay for seating, so their only choice was selecting all middle seats.
Now it appears that may happen on all domestic flights.
If they can't select seats, they can't select middle seats either.

If they can't select seats together for free, they may still be able to select scattered seats, middle or otherwise, for free. And that is indeed what they select when not wanting to be hit by more post-purchase fees (or even post-ticketing price hikes in some cases).

There are travel parties that consist of one adult with 3 or more young children. Be kind to the parent traveling alone with a four year old and a set of twins or triplets, as not all families on flights consist of two adults.

I do think airlines (the legacies) should block the last row (or 2 on larger planes) of Y to help out on these issues.

Those families that are stuck and need to sit together can do so, but next to the toilet. If they object to that, should have paid for better seats.

BTW, this thread is certainly not specific to the DL E- issue.

This thread is specific to the DL E- issue, as the restrictions on E- will make the issue of separated travel parties more problematic in the future than it currently is; that is unless and until DL changes something else.

What's to ensure that the buyers are fully aware of the restrictions when purchasing elsewhere?
It is fairly clear when purchasing on delta.com, but on some of the cut-rate websites, heck, I even have trouble finding out what fare class they are offering. I suspect the infrequent traveller will not have a clue as to the restrictions for the tickets bought on kayak or expedia or .... Even if the magic "E" shows up, that won't mean much to many passengers. I think DL has shot themselves in the foot with respect to families travelling together (thank goodness, there are - for now - very few flights offering this fare).

Unintended consequences of 'Basic Economy'...

Delta could sell these only one at a time. That would cause other issues but would take care of the unaccompanied minor one.

Bingo.
