Need 10000 Delta miles

Wife and I each have 55000 miles but need 65000 for a one way back from Hawaii. We both have got the Gold and Platinum cards. What's an easy fix? Thanks for any help. Fixed dates suck for travel.

Are you booking one way fares?

Don't buy one-ways using Delta miles. There's no half-priced one-ways (until 2014). If you really really really need to, buy that one-way, along with a low/saver level return in the future that you will be throwing away. The round trip prices out as the average of each direction.

You can transfer miles into Delta from SPG or from Amex MR.

to be honest there are often very good fares to hawaii and even if low award is available it might not be the best use of them. if it is 500-600 for a ticket in my opinion it is better to get the miles under the old program, under the new one I guess it depends on your elite level.

Using 45000 united miles to get there and hoping to use the Delta miles to get back home.

Delta awards will price as round-trips until one-way awards are made available with the program updates 1/1/2015. This is a poor use of DL miles.

I'll wait till the end of the year. Can I use those miles to book with a partner airline? Does it still take the same number of miles?

Yes, you will be able to book one way at half price on 1/1/15. No guarantees on availability though.

Under the current program, partners price at the Low mileage. We don't yet know if there will be a change to redemptions in SM2015.

Using a partner carrier doesn't solve the problem of one-ways priced as round-trips if booked before 1/1/15.

Possibly you could book a round trip now and change for a one way later (with a change fee...)

Since your query is specific to Delta, it's been moved to the designated airline forum for further discussion.

Thanks

It's not obvious that doing so won't require availability at the time the change is made, which would mean needlessly paying award ticket change fees with no advantage.
