So the kiosk system probably caught the problem; the agent should have looked more closely at your passport.
The other passport issue that can cause problems: some countries require that you have at least two empty pages in the passport. I can attest that extra pages cost as much as a new passport.

But OP, I assume you did not check in online?? According to a friend of mine that does not work if you don't have the 6 month validity.
Rule of thumb is that your passport is only good for 9 YEARS -- not 10
