I would most definitely change the flight, NYC airports have too many delays. I chose a 7 hour connection over a 2 1/2 one in EWR coming in on a DH8. Rather spend some time in the club than sitting on the runway counting down my connection.
You can't SDC on an international itinerary except possibly after all of the international segments have been flown. For SDS, YMMV, but the chances would be better if you have no checked bags.

Knowing the DL agents at ORD, I would be pretty surprised if they didn't let you standby on an earlier flight for free on the day of departure.

Also, if there's a delay, you still have time to reroute over ATL or DTW instead of JFK.
