Priority sitting on Virgin Atlantic

Has anyone had any experience with seat selections on VS flights as a STE+? I booked a ticket today(mile run alert, I guess: MOW-JFK-LHR for $429) and when I called VS, they told me that they have some seats(bulkhead, exit row, etc) in the cabin for an additional price.

Are Delta elites subject to the same rule or is it similar to what we get on KLM and AF?

Modified thread title. Thank you ashill for pointing it out. I was talking about Virgin Atlantic. I was just a bit surprised because even when I book on KLM and call them directly(Delta reps couldn't help), they put me in EC free of charge.

I managed to snag a "Preferred" Premium Economy seat on a VA flight from SYD at no cost.

The question, though it's not clear from the title, is about VS (Virgin Atlantic), not VA.
