Using Skymiles

I have about 8K skymiles for over a year and I never seem to be flying Delta. Can I convert to them any hotel program? All other options points towards the overinflated marketplace or buying a reward ticket (for which I don't have enough).

Just wondering if these can be used in some useful manner.

You might be able to use them to upgrade a flight, depending on the itinerary and fare class.

Magazines - if you read The Economist it is an excellent value.

They can't be transferred out with any value and you don't have enough for an award ticket.

I've used them for rental cars --- you have enough for about a one day rental...

be careful with the insurance though.

I think one needs the DL Amex to access the SkyMiles marketplace (and hotel/car rental).

No, you dont need the Delta Amex. I don't have the Delta Amex and have recently used both the Skymiles marketplace and hotel/car rental.

It's AmEx or status. If you have neither, you have no luck.
