Now if you wanted to stopover in JFK on the return, I think you'd have to depart on CDG-FCO within 24 hours of the scheduled arrival of DTW-LHR. That's my best theory. However, DL.dumb is so buggy on some of these things that I'm not even interested in trying too hard to see if it would work. Most situations I know of where people got embedded surface sectors outside of origin/destination did it over the phone. The other interesting question is if you could do DTW-LHR//CDG-FCO//AMS-DTW. Does that surface sector LHR-CDG count as your only open jaw, or is it coded as a segment and thus you can take FCO-AMS as an open jaw. I suspect you can't get away with that, but I don't know.

Thanks for the insight! Out of curiousity I tried to run the first case through the online booking engine and indeed it could not handle an open-jaw located not in the origin nor in the destination and a stopover in the same itinerary. Unfortunately, it did not matter whether the next flight in an open-jaw is within 24 hours of the arrival of the previous one:

DL flights are verified to be in low.
Maybe it's different when booking with an agent over the phone...

How to extend lay/stopover in AMS or elsewhere?

Hi there,

I'm booked on a Fri morning flight from Heathrow to ATL with a 4.5 hr lay/stopover in Amsterdam. I would love to extend that time to 24 hours to do some sightseeing. I'd also love to change the lay/stopover location to Brussels, Munich, anywhere really but would keep as Amersterdam if that was the only option. I called Delta and they told me it would be $175 just to make a change plus any cost difference. Does anyone have suggestions on how I can do this at little to no cost? Delta seemed to indicate my only option to do this for free would be if they asked for volunteers at the gate due to overbooking, etc.

Any guidance, suggestions are greatly appreciated!
eBeth

Welcome to FT!

It sounds like you're on a paid ticket. The agents were completely correct in that case. You have to build in long connections and stopovers when you book the flights, as otherwise there are change fees and fare differences involved. The one possible exception would be if there's been a big schedule change that makes your arrival or departure differ from what you originally booked by (typically) 60+ minutes.

open jaw question

Can this routing be done using SkyMiles and if so what would be the cost. I tried a booking on Delta.com and it did not go through

TLV-BCN NYC- TLV.

It is available on my dates for $720 on AZ but would prefer miles
