Question on Hawaiian Code Share

We are flying from Kona to Honolulu then hopping the big bird to Atlanta. Can HA check our bags all the way through? Will they charge us to check our bags? Or do we just check with Delta in KOA and let them handle everything? Thanks

YMMV on this one. Yes, they will send your bags all the way through. And yes, they will charge you. Generally, the policies of the originating flight take precedence, i.e. HA will charge you for bags, at least from Kona to Honolulu, at the inter-island rates. If you have elite status (i.e. free bag check) with Delta, then it is a matter of figuring whether it would cost more to just pay the mainland rates through HA, or splitting it up between HA and DL.

One thing I did (because I have PM status with DL) was not pay the bag rate online; I waited until I got to the counter to check the bags, and ensured that I was only paying the lower inter-island rate, since that was the only time my bags were on HA metal. Once they have your money, it's probably harder to get it back.

I am a GM with Delta. So there is a lower inter island bag rate? Should I do online check in and not check any bags? Would I do online check in with Delta or HA?

If you booked with Delta, DL's baggage policy and fares apply. Your bag will be checked thru unless your layover at HNL is beyond the max. (4 hrs IRRC) HA is very strict on weight so if your bag is even an ounce over 50# expect to re-pack or pay the fee. Even if you booked with DL, check-in with HA. Remember bags going to the mainland will need the Agriculture inspection so allow a little extra time for that.

If you booked the HA segment through Delta (one PNR) Delta is the originating carrier and you should not be charged. However, plan on paying for your bag. I have been on this route many times and can tell you that HA is very aggressive at collecting bag fees. Also, as stated above, make sure your bags are under 50 lbs. If you booked 2 tickets (ATL-HNL on Delta and HNL-KOA on HA) HA will not send your bags through. You will have to get them in HNL.

I booked the trip on one Delta PNR so I guess I can check the bags through but will have to pay the bag fees. I hope I can get them reimbursed with my Credit card.

Did you select HA as the carrier for your $200 reimbursement as part of the AX Plat?

No, but some folks have been able to get their airline fees reimbursed with the Jp Morgan Palladium. I am going to give that a try.
