Basic info on Platinum Status Intl Upgrades

Hi all-

I searched a fair bit here, and found a few threads but they all seemed pretty old.

I'll be Plat next week, I haven't been Plat on DL before. My grandmother and I will be flying ATL-MAN this fall, and I want to get an award BE seat for her, and upgrade myself if possible.

Is there a SWU sticky here? I could not find anything recent. I was hoping I could confirm something in advance. I know the fare class will be pretty expensive, but hopefully worth it.

Thanks and sorry I was not able to find a FAQ or sticky on this.

Y,b,m fares are required, and discounted business is often as cheap or cheaper.

Read the sticky on finding BE award seats. It's very useful.

The only two things the link won't tell you:
1. Y/B/M tickets are pricey. More so than you might think. And more so than discounted business in some cases.
2. Inventory bucket you're looking for, if using ExpertFlyer or similar, is Z.

If you don't have EF you can get the reps to confirm availability for you. You can also waitlist, but I never waitlist. If I can't confirm I don't book. I'm not sitting in the back on an M fare.

What would be the fares code to look for discounted business? I? Any others?

S is usually the cheapest (if available). I believe this is the order: J C D I S.

Not every city pair will have Business fares filed for all of J C D I S, even if inventory buckets are available. A fare rule tool (ExpertFlyer is good for this) will identify advanced purchase window and minimum stay. Some of the most deeply discounted Business fares have a 50-day adv and 7-day min stay. That far out one is likely to find coach fares much cheaper than YBM.

Right now M fare is $3100 and lowest BE fare is $5000, so not a bad discount if I can get it confirmed in advance. Not nearly as good as United SWU, but that was expected...

Thanks all for the help.

Also, most of us here urge others not to buy an M fare unless Z is available!!

It's also worth noting that SWUs expire one year from when you select them. Thus, wait until right around when you're ready to apply one (it might take a couple of hours for them to appear in your account after selecting) rather than selecting them the moment you make PM.
