Booking code: change from default of U
Hi,
I'm flying from SFO->JFK next week and am hoping to use an upgrade certificate. When I try to buy a ticket, all of the fare classes come back as U, which of course can't be used with an upgrade certificate.
Is there anyway of buying a particular fare type, outside of the full fare coach?
Thanks,
Alex

Go to the "Advanced Booking Page" and there will be a drop down menu near the bottom labeled "fare class." From there, you can opt to search for K fares or higher. Since U is available, it should return K fares as the least expensive eligible fare.
It's worth noting that systemwide upgrade certificates will not clear in advance on these routes (JFK-LAX/SFO), and will only give you priority on the gate upgrade list. You should make sure that the SWU is coded correctly to grant this priority.

This. You will be waitlisted for the upgrade. Once you check in, you should ask an agent what your upgrade priority code is. If it's UP2A or UP2B, the SWU waitlist has been done correctly. If it's UP3D or UP3, the SWU hasn't been applied correctly and you're on the airport upgrade list for a complimentary upgrade based on your regular medallion status.
