LAX-MSP red-eye...how busy?

Is this usually a busy route departing on any given Tuesday at 12:20 am?

Did it about 4 times a few years back as a FO and have done it about 4 or 5 times more recently as a GM and am 100% for the upgrade.

I'm hoping to SDC to this flight but not sure I want to risk it.

ExpertFlyer shows 9s in all coach buckets +/-3 days from next Tuesday. Sure, they can sell some seats before then, and it's a flight to a hub so IROPS rebookings can come into play, but this is pretty empty as flights go in a time of sustained 80% load factors.

The date I'm eyeing is 2/21/12.

Not a "normal" Tuesday as President's Day is 2/20/12.

How ironic. I am booked on that red-eye flight. Hoping for the upgrade but not counting on it.

So this is an interesting flight. This flight and Memphis flights are basically used to by DL to mop up any misconnects or overbookings from earlier in the evening, especiall on holiday weekends. You will often see the flights wide open even up until the day before the flight but then on the day it fills up fast and often is impossible to SDC on.

However! I think DL is often over protective with these 2 flights, it is often impossible to SDC on to them over the phone as DL zeros them out and holds the seats. However if you go to the airport and request the SDC you will often be able to get on the flight has those seats arent really full they are just held in reserve this s particularly true of the MEM flight. So its a bit of a gamble and I wouldnt suggest it before a holiday weekend when the flight really might be full, but in general your chances are pretty good!

Hope this helps
