Upgrade Issues

I am platinum and have noticed on 2 recent trips this week that my upgrades are not being processed 5 days out as usual, but rather I only get upgraded at the gate. Also, I'm currently on a flight from LAX-CVG and ended up getting no upgrade at all. Out of curiosity, did a bunch of Diamonds get on board or did people just buy F tickets? I'm 100% on this route for 2 yrs now, so this is definitely a first.

I'm also still not upgraded from CVG-DCA right after this flight. Is there an issue with DL's upgrade system?

This issue gets raised regularly...

space-available UGs are not a guarantee. Every route have different parameters based on likelihood of DL actually selling seats in F. For example, JFK-LAX or SFO all UGs clear at the gate due to so many last-minute walk-up purchases. On other routes I've seen DL hold back varying levels of inventory.

There's nothing wrong with the UG system.

UG's are not an entitlement

So, your concern is that you sat in FC for free only 66% of the time over your last 3 flights?

Why would DL ever process a freebie UG when it might sell the seat? DL can always process at the gate and that worked for you 2 of 3 times. On the segment it didn't work, people either paid for the seat or had a higher status than you on the UG list.

So, if DL hired you to revamp its system, how would you handle Mr. DLFLYER's complaint?

So.....
Where are you getting your statistics from? I made no mention of # of flights...

I understand they don't have do UG 5 days out, but in the last several yrs, this is the first time they have done it to this extent. Just wondering if there is a reason why

Check that your reservations say Upgrade Requested and not Upgrade Eligible. There seems to be a "bug" in delta.com where it is resetting that sometimes when you book.

You will have to call CSR to have it corrected if that is the issue.

Well, on your flight this morning from LAX-CVG there was a number of DMs and PMs who missed upgrades. So, no DLs UG system is not having issues....just a full FC cabin which happens a lot on Sundays, Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays.

If your connecting flight is 2942 to DCA, there are still 6 seats open in F but I'm sure there are a number of DMs and PMs too. Sunday is not an easy day for UGs at all. But there definitely is no blame to DLs upgrade system because it is working properly. Apparently they are selling the FC seats.

Your post said two recent trips where you were UG at gate and then mentions a third where you were not UG at all. As I read that, you were UG 2 of 3 trips or 66% of time.

Upgrades don't always happen. Yesterday, missed an upgrade Kalispell Montana to MSP....It happens. But I paid for coach and I flew in coach...Thats the way it goes!

Delta must be selling more seats in FC on some routes now. Even when I was only an FO, I ALWAYS cleared at the window for DTW/LAS.

I am flying there next weekend and my Friday upgrade hasn't cleared yet and it's t-5. According to the seat map only 5 of 26 FC seats are still available, so who knows if I will clear or not. This is a route that typically had gate upgrades for sale in the past.

Coming back on 9/19, when I checked the seat map a few days ago NO seats in F were showing avialable. I realize this isn't always a good indicater but I tried doing a dummy booking for a first class flight on those days and my monday flight didn't even come up so first must be sold out.

I figure I won't always get upgraded and have an exit row both ways. I'll be wanting to eat after I arrive in vegas anyway so the meal service isn't a big deal and I'll just use the HOOU on my boarding pass and the ones I received in my medallian package if I want to drink.

Pretty full flights in both directions. Might be worth looking at SDC to a later flight if you want the upgrade.

How can you tell how many DMs or PMs are on a flight?

It's just weird first is at zero this far out on a flight that typically has gate upgrades for sale. Dealing with SDC on a differentflight isn't worth it for a CHANCE at an upgrade though for this trip. Coming back the flight I am on is the only convenient flight and going, I want to get to LAS ASAP.
