Gate Allocation ATL
As long as I have flown, Delta has had some times when "we" have landed and had someone in our gate. It usually was corrected in 10 mins or less. It seems this summer, this happens a lot more often. It does not matter if we are early, late, or on time. It also seems to take longer to get a gate.

The DL operations manager at ATL should be fired imo. Not just regarding what you noted above, but it's been a terrible summer for delays and mishaps through ATL, even without much bad weather compared to a normal year. It' easy to blame ATC and weather, but it's really poor operations and aircraft flow that's creating a bad DL experience there.

Some of the mechanical and other issues in ATL are being blamed on the increased variety of equipment. This causes pilot and maint issues that are greater than normal... and normal is not always smooth. I got this info direct from Delta people who I know personally... my Diamondness does not work on them as they knew me when...
They did not have any answer for the gate issues other than saying they are trying to pack 100 gallons of (dookie) in a 5 gallon bucket....

Hopefully this will be curtailed with the opening of the new International terminal. E Concourse is pretty huge with a lot of gates. That said, I agree with the person who said the operations manager should be fired. The whole airport staff at ATL is lazy and has a "couldn't care less" attitude. I mean, if they can't even be bothered to update the board at baggage claim, that says a whole lot.

MEM is an alternative for a few connections XXX-MEM-YYY rather than XXX-ATL-YYY (and DL will do that to optimize yield), but that doesn't change gate utilization in Atlanta which is the metric surrounding the OP's gate unavailability. MEM is no more an alternate hub for ATL than the Gary, Indiana, airport was for O'Hare: insufficient numbers of people want to go there, and decades of passenger data - including the failed fourth bank at MEM when Delta was running eleven at ATL - confirm this.

From Wikipedia:
Also scheduled to be completed after the new international terminal and concourse is a new terminal south of the current terminals. The project is currently known as the South Gate Complex, and is expected to include up to 70 gates at an estimated cost of approximately $1.8 billion.[32] The new terminal will be connected to the main terminal by an expanded automated people mover system.[33] When the South Gate Complex is completed, it is expected that most domestic carriers other than Delta will move to the SGC. This would leave Delta as the sole domestic carrier at the current terminal, which it will share with its SkyTeam partners. Since the SGC is not planned to have Customs and Border Protection facilities, international arrivals other than pre-cleared flights will also continue to use the current terminal (specifically British Airways and Lufthansa).

There's absolutely no reason I can see that DL couldn't utilize MEM more. I'm talking about adding flights to and from MEM as opposed to flights via ATL, not for folks to take already existing flights. MEM is underutilized and it needs to be used more. People (like me and lots of people I know in HSV) would be happy to connect via MEM as opposed to ATL if more flights were made available, and it would relieve some of the congestion in ATL.
