I just tried to book what I REALLY want to do, which is to fly from BRS (bristol) which is near my parents home, and avoids the hell that is Heathrow - to MSP and then back to LHR to catch my Cathay flight home.

The price looked good.. the outbound flight through Amsterdam was fine .... and coming back I had three options, each of which took more than THIRTY hours via Baltimore. ...???? When I searched for M class for the LHR return direct there were plenty of direct flights to choose from ... so how to I make this silly booking engine show them to me?

Anyway - to bed now ... to struggle on again with this in the morning.!
Right, this happens when one of the flights end up running out on the low fare buckets. Do a search by schelude, not by price. If this gives rocks, write down the segments you want which you see in the M search, then use the multicity option. Remember that this will cause multiple fare basis codes to be used, and for domestic, then need to be K or higher to upgrade, M or higher for international.

If the OP is trying to burn miles, they need to be looking for availability in G on the domestic segments and Z on the international.
Thanks for the correction.
Here's the fare class chart:

EDIT: To above poster: I thought you could only upgrade on DL operated flights?, I do know under some cases you can upgrade KL or AF using with a SWU, but not with miles. (granted, this info may be out of date ...)
You can but now with the E+ product fare class W on AF and KL this is what you would be upgraded to, not BE equivalent. It has to be a code share flight which you can see and book on DL.com.
IMHO not worth the miles for the same TALT upgrade is only 50Euro for DM's

Currently can only be done with PMUs, not miles based off the other thread on this topic. Also, AF doesn't fly LHR-USA direct.
