Adding miles to a flight

Been reading on here for about a year. Time to join up and participate.

Question: This Saturday, I am getting into town early and will have some free time. Is there a way to adjust my flight to be longer? A few extra layovers?

I would be doing this to get more miles.

This happens from time to time and I would love to get some extra miles by taking an alternate route or adding a flight.

You should do this at time of booking, but if you do have status, you could try SDC for a longer route if available

As long as there aren't any int'l segments in your itinerary, you can do SDC - Same Day Confirmed - to another routing, as long as there is at least 1 seat available, and the new routing is considered to be a valid routing for the fare you purchased, but SDC can be a little complicated, as you can only attempt it as early as 3 hours prior to the new itinerary you want to take - AND, it's likely to goof up any upgrades you may have already gotten in advance. If you tell us a more specifics about your itinerary, perhaps someone here can help you a little better!

Thanks for the input.

I would do it at the time of booking but sometimes it is something that I don't know until the date gets closer. I often don't have a full schedule until a week before an event.

For example, this weekend I am FWA to DTW to DCA getting in around 5p.

I thought we were going to meet up that evening but it turns out we don't do anything until the next day. So I have all evening to add a leg or two in there.

For SDC, is the easiest way to do that from the counter at the airport? on the phone? is there a way to do it online?

What about going to DTW and going to the Sky Club to get them to re-route me for more miles?

Note: I have checked baggage.

basically I want to do a mileage run when I have a few extra hours and not have to pay for it.

If you go to DL.com and do a timetable search for FWA to DCA, quite a few unusual routing combinations come up - many with 3 flight segments. You'll hafto decide, based on the schedule and the amount of miles the new flights will earn you, if it's really worth your time.

I recently changed via SDC from PIT/MSP/DEN to PIT/DTW/SLC/DEN for some extra miles. My DTW/SLC flight was late due to an unruly, drunk pax who started walking around while taxiing. We went back to the gate to eject him - arrived late to SLC - missed my flight to DEN - got on the next one 90 min later - arrived in DEN at peak rush hour and ended up wasting a whole day flying!! - - But I got the miles - AND upgrades!!!

Take note of davetravels story above. Remember that every leg you add to the flight means that a misconnect can occur. Make sure that there are later flights available to get to your final destination in time for your planned meetings to take place.

Having said that, happy flying and safe travels.

Two more things . . . Here's a link to the FT mega thread on info about SDC:

http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/delta...tions-faq.html

And, don't forget that the fact that I'm in PIT - - the "PITBONUS" sweetened the pot a tad with the extra 1075 MQM's I gained were doubled!!

davetravels: Thanks for the link and shared experience. When you say to search for timetable flights, can I do this if the ticket is already booked?

What I meant was, just go to DL.com and look at the timetable to try to choose which potential itineraries may work for you. Then, on your day of travel, 3 hours before the NEW FLIGHT that you want to change to - BUT NO EARLIER - call DL and see if there's space for you!
