Medallion question, please help
Here is my delima. I have purchased 3 airlines tickets from Delta for a round trip to Boston departing May 22. It was supposed to be 4 of us but the forth was scared to leave her husband who was having some health problems. Well, her husband passed away suddenly Sunday night and she thought she would consider going to get away. Well, now Delta only has preffered seating left and it is only for Medallion members. So, we none have that status, is there a way to get that status? I saw where you can buy miles, would that work? The lady at Delta said she could be at the airport when the plane departs and buy a ticket. That would be ok for the departing trip, but how about coming back? There are only preferred seating for that as well, so she could be stranded in Boston? What do we do, or are we out of luck?
thanks,
Susan

Preferred seating is for Medallion members and you have to fly to get Medallion Status. There are credit cards that will give you Medallion points, but you would have to spend a lot to get Medallion status that way and I don't think that would work for you in this situation.
Your friend can buy her ticket now and if there are no seat assignments available now, she can get her seat at the airport. No seat assignments available is not the same as no seats available (flight sold out). I wouldn't suggest that she wait until the day of departure to buy the ticket as the price could be quite high then or there might not be any seats available.
Bottom line as as long as the flights are for sale, you can buy a ticket. Your friend may not get a seat next to you, but she should get a seat, even if it is not assigned at the time of ticketing.
Hope this answers your questions.
